Micronuclei induction in Rana catesbeiana tadpoles by the pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin

Abstract: Pyrethroid lambda-cyhalothrin genotoxicity was evaluated using the micronucleus test in Rana catesbeiana tadpoles. The effects of concentration and exposure time on the micronuclei frequency were studied in blood smears obtained from tadpoles exposed to four concentrations (0.02, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 µg/L) of the compound for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and 8, 15, 20 and 30 days. As a positive control, tadpoles were exposed to cyclophosphamide (5 mg/L). The micronucleated cell frequency was expressed per 1,000 cells. R. c… Show more

“…In recent studies, -cyhalothrin was reported to induce micronuclei in fish, and also chromosomal aberrations in bone marrow and micronuclei in polychromatic erythrocytes in rats (Campana et al, 1999;Cavas et al, 2003;Celik et al, 2003). Given the wide range of negative genotoxicity studies (reverse mutation in bacteria, cell transformation in vitro, cytogenetic effects in the bone marrow, dominant lethal mutations in mice) on cyhalothrin and an even more extensive range of negative tests (reverse mutations in bacteria, gene mutations in mammalian cells in vitro, UDS in vitro, micronucleus formation in mice in vivo) on -cyhalothrin, JECFA concluded that the data as a whole suggested that cyhalothrin presents no genotoxic hazard to humans (IPCS, 2004a).…”

“…With respect to agricultural pesticides and fertilizers, different authors have suggested they are important factors in amphibian declines, malformation and survival (Bishop et al 1999;Campana et al 2003;Lajmanovich et al 2003;Mann et al 2003).…”

“…Sublethal effects of pyrethroids on tadpoles have been detected. Salibián (1992) reports neurotoxicity caused by deltamethrin in Rhinella arenarum, and Campana et al (2003) the induction of micronuclei caused by k-cyhalothrin exposure in Lithobates catesbeianus. Also, induction of micronuclei was observed in Odontophrynus americanus exposed to CY (Cabagna et al 2006).…”
