The expression of ABH and Lewis antigens in Brazilian semi-isolated Black communities

Abstract: The expression of the ABH and Lewis blood groups was determined in blood and saliva samples from two semi-isolated Black communities of Northern Brazil: Cametá and Alcântara. The distributions of ABO blood group phenotypes and the ABH secretor status frequencies showed no significant differences between these populations. In contrast, there was a difference regarding the frequency of the red blood cell Le(a-b-) phenotypes, associated with erythrocyte/saliva discordance, as confirmed by the observation that ind… Show more

“…Furthermore, the 25% Lewis negative (Le aÀbÀ ) individuals observed in this study is significantly higher than the 5.7% observed in Scandinavia or the 10% observed in Portugal and Spain [Torrado et al, 1997;Serpa et al, 2003;Larsson et al, 2006]. However, the frequency of Lewis-negative individuals in Nicaragua is similar to Colombia (22%) [Torrado et al, 1997] and can reach up to 40% in isolated black communities in Brazil [Corvelo et al, 2002].…”

“…P[6] strains that have been most frequently found in individuals of the Lewis negative phenotype are seldom encountered in Europe where this phenotype represents only 5–10% of the population. Interestingly, its frequency can be as high as 30% in some Latino-American and African populations 42 , 43 where those strains are more common. Since mucins from Lewis positive individuals also contain the un-substituted type 1 precursor, albeit in lower amount than Lewis negative individuals 44 , Lewis positive children may also be infected, although less frequently, increasing to some extent the pool of susceptible individuals in the population.…”

“…She also attributed this high frequency of Lewis (a-b-) phenotype due to decreased concentration of circulating Lewis antigen occurring during diseases caused by parasites, infection or other pathologic conditions. 16 The limitations of the study was the relatively low sample size which cannot be used as an assessment of prevalence of secretor status in the local population.…”
