Show more

“…In addition, cold fronts that propagate along the coast probably take part in the higher levels of rainfall in G 5 's region (Kousky, 1979). Rainfall in this region of the state is also most likely influenced by the EWD and seasonal change in the position of the SASA, which modulates the intensity and direction of winds along the coast during autumn and winter (Moura and Shukla, 1981;Rao et al, 1993;Nobre and Shukla, 1996;Moura et al, 2009). Another likely influence to the rainfall in the coastal region and in the hinterland is the warm and unstable maritime tropical air mass (mTw), which is found in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean from latitudes 10 • N to 25 • S. This air mass, together with trade winds, creates a two-layer wind regime in the northeast coast of Brazil (Tenório, 1989).…”

“…Analyses indicated that the inter-annual climate variations in the NEB are far more related with the SST variability in the South Atlantic than with the tropical Pacific. Moura et al (2009) correlated the precipitation (March-June) over the eastern sector of the NEB with ocean SST anomalies. The analyses showed the influence of the Atlantic and the Pacific on rainfalls over the eastern sector.…”

“…Moura et al (2009) noticed that, when the ITCZ takes place in the northern hemisphere, it exhibits an SST much warmer than usual. This favors the occurrence of drought in the NEB.…”
