Anaerobic biodigestion of solid and semi-solid wastes has been widely used for the treatment of these residues and methane production; however, during the process (more specifically in the acidogenic phase), there is a tendency of pH reduction, an unfavorable condition to methanogenic bacteria. Thus, the present work aims to evaluate the methanization potential of an agroindustrial anaerobic granular sludge (AIS) from UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor, individually and biodigested with food waste (FW) from the University Restaurant of the Federal University of Pernambuco with buffering agent (AIS + FW + b) and without it (AIS + FW). After the laboratory tests, the AIS + FW + b configuration obtained a cumulative methane production approximately six times greater than that of AIS + FW, and approximately twice that of the inoculum alone (AIS).

Esta pesquisa objetivou avaliar o uso de diferentes resíduos orgânicos provindos de restaurante universitário (RU), no processo de biodigestão anaeróbia. O experimento foi conduzido no Centro de Ciências Agrárias (CCA) da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), nos meses de junho e julho de 2015, totalizando 43 dias. Considerou-se um delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com 4 tratamentos (T1: arroz, T2: beterraba + alface, T3: feijão e T4: arroz+beterraba+alface+feijão) e 3 repetições. Todos os tratamentos receberam 500g de resíduo in natura, de acordo com seu teor de umidade, 1000g de água e 150g de inóculo de esterco bovino. Monitorou-se, antes, durante e depois do processo de fermentação as temperaturas internas dos biodigestores, temperatura interna e externa da caixa, onde os biodigestores ficaram contidos e a produção de biogás. Analisou-se o pH, os teores de carbono orgânico e nitrogênio total dos resíduos e a massa do biofertilizante. Observou-se que o tratamento T1 iniciou a produção de biogás a partir do sétimo dia, o tratamento T3 teve maior produção de biogás, enquanto os tratamentos T2 e T4 não produziram biogás. O tratamento T1 apresentou maior redução do teor de carbono orgânico e maior acréscimo do teor de nitrogênio total. Concluiu-se que as condições de temperatura dos biodigestores e os tipos de resíduos orgânicos afetam o desempenho da biodigestão anaeróbia, o arroz e feijão são potenciais resíduos orgânicos para produção de biogás e biofertilizante.

This study was aimed at determining the effect of temperature on the stabilization of organic solid waste conjugated with sewage sludge in anaerobic batch reactors (ABR), and to estimate the efficiency of the process in producing biogas and methane. The substrate contained 36.2 g L -1 of total solids comprising residues from fruits and vegetables enriched with anaerobic sludge from sanitary sewage (4:1, w/w). The reactors were of 1.15 L capacity and were operated at 25.5, 40 and 50°C (ABR1, ABR2 and ABR3, respectively) for 160 days. The efficiencies of transformation of total volatile solids in ABR1, ABR2 and ABR3 were, respectively, 43.2, 34.2 and 32%, and the transformation of chemical oxygen demand showed a similar tendency with efficiencies of 39.5, 33.6 and 16.6%, respectively. The mean volumes of biogas accumulated by ABR1, ABR2 and ABR3 were 28.85, 21.24 and 20.54 L, respectively, while the respective mean volumes of methane were 9.04, 7.11 and 1.11 L. The results demonstrate that the activity of methane-producing microorganisms was inhibited at higher process temperatures. It is concluded that anaerobic digestion at ambient temperature represents an economical and environmentally viable strategy for the disposal of municipal solid wastes.
