AbstractThe use of polystyrene trays for producing green seedlings, including cucumber, is a technique recognized and widely used by smallholder farmers. Several studies have been made aiming to identify which polystyrene trays are more suitable for the seedling production for each species. The time remain after seedling emergence in these structures, the substrates used, among other issues have also been targets of studies aimed the seedlings production technique optimization. However, great part of these studies did not take into consideration the possibility of direct sowing (DS) in a definitive place, technique widely used in the past. As a result, great part of recommendations about cucumber cultivation does not take into consideration the possibility of DS, technique which would present several benefits. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate cucumber pickles commercial production (CP) of cucumbers for pickles in different cropping systems: with transplanted seedlings and plants directly sowed on soil. The greatest CP was obtained in DS, with 60,02t ha -1 and equally in transplanted seedlings 10 days after sowing (DAS), with 56,62t ha -1 . The smallest CP, significantly different among themselves, occurred in treatments 20 DAS with 40,24t ha -1 and 30 DAS with 30,68t ha -1 .
