The economic exploitation of rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) usage is primarily directed toward latex extraction. After the productive life of the rubber tree forest, the managed area is harvested for planting reformulation. The harvested wood is most often used for energy generation purposes. The aim of this work was to study the feasibility of using rubberwood waste and castor oil-based polyurethane resin in the production of particleboards. Homogeneous and heterogeneous panels were made with nominal dimensions of 500 x 500 mm and thicknesses of 10 mm using particles from GT1 and RRIM600 clones of the rubber tree and 12% castor oil-based polyurethane adhesive. The panels were pressed at 140 °C for 12 min with 40 kgf/cm 2 specific pressure. Density, moisture content, thickness swelling, water absorption for 2 and 24 h, static bending, and internal bonding determinations were performed according to the Brazilian Standard (NBR) 14810-3 (2006) for the physicalmechanical panel characterization. The results show that using Hevea brasiliensis in particleboard production is viable. However, multilayer boards exhibited better results.

RESUMOA preocupação ecológica alcançou vários espaços na sociedade, atingindo também as administrações públicas, sendo uma resposta às pressões exercidas por organizações internacionais, como também pela própria sociedade, cobrando o cumprimento das legislações, buscando desenvolver uma melhor qualidade ambiental e promover nas municipalidades reações que busquem respostas para essas exigências porque durante décadas essa responsabilidade ambiental esteve centrada somente nas esferas governamentais federais e estaduais. Entretanto, em 1997, Conselho Nacional de Meio Ambiente (CONAMA), pela resolução nº 237/ 1997, institui a avaliação dos impactos ambientais locais causados por empreendimentos para competência dos municípios, que deve coordenar as ações, desenvolvendo a educação ambiental para a compreensão e respeito da comunidade com o meio ambiente, implantando normas que controlem a deterioração ambiental, possibilitando a diminuição de áreas degradadas, assumindo assim a missão de estimular o desenvolvimento sustentável local, com de equidade social, desenvolvimento econômico e proteção ambiental.

Remote Sensing Images to Detect Soy Plantations in the Amazon Biome—The Soy Moratorium Initiative

Abstract:The Soy Moratorium is an initiative to reduce deforestation rates in the Amazon biome based on the hypothesis that soy is a deforestation driver. Soy planted in opened areas after July 24th, 2006 cannot be commercialized by the associated companies to the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries (ABIOVE) and the National Association of Cereal Exporters (ANEC), which represent about 90% of the Brazilian soy market. The objective of this work is to present the evaluation of the fourth year of monitoring new soy plantations within the Soy Moratorium context. With the use of satellite images from the MODIS sensor, together with aerial survey, it was possible to identify 147 polygons with new soy plantations on 11,698 ha. This soy area represents 0.39% of the of the total deforested area during the moratorium, in the three soy producing states of the Amazon biome, and 0.6% of the cultivated soy area in the Amazon biome, indicating that soy is currently a minor deforestation driver. The quantitative geospatial information provided by an effective monitoring approach is paramount to the implementation of a governance OPEN ACCESSSustainability 2012, 4 1075 process required to establish an equitable balance between environmental protection and agricultural production.
