Reformulating the commons

Abstract: The western hemisphere is richly endowed with a diversity of natural resource systems that are governed by complex local and national institutional arrangements that have not, until recently, been well understood. While many local communities that possess a high degree of autonomy to govern local resources have been highly successful over long periods of time, others fail to take action to prevent overuse and degradation of forests, inshore fisheries, and other natural resources. The conventional theory used t… Show more

“…The method proposed here aimed to fill a gap noticed in literature in the field of Economics that already indicates relevant variables related to the selforganization of communities who share a renewable natural resource (cf. Ostrom, 2002Ostrom, , 2009Ostrom, et al, 1994), which is not possible when the individuals cannot freely communicate with each other. It also contributes to the community of behavior analysts by proposing an important methodological tool for studying the long-term effects of behavioral interventions focused on natural resource preservation and the establishment of pro-environmental behavior by society (for a review see Lehman &Geller, 2004 andLuke &Alavosius, 2012).…”

“…Internationally this led to a search for the commons successfully managed by their users. Data collected from the field presented both successful and unsuccessful user-managed CPRs (Ostrom 2000). By studying both types of CPR institutions, Ostrom developed, in her book Governing the Commons (1990), 'a series of design principles that characterize the configuration of rules that are used' (Ostrom 2000, 40).…”
