“…The presence of semen coagulum in all samples corresponded to the majority of previous reports on Neotropical primate semen samples [Bush et al, 1975;Lawrence et al, 1976;Kuederling et al, 1996;Barnabe et al, 2002]; in these studies, semen was mainly collected by RPE. Many factors are reported to be related to coagulum formation, and a few studies comparing RPE with other techniques, such as penile vibrostimulation [Yeoman et al, 1998;Schneiders et al, 2004] and vaginal washing , showed lower coagulum formation and better sperm quality with these other techniques.…”

“…The 100% success obtained for semen collection by RPE showed this is a suitable and safe way to collect semen from Goeldi's monkey, an expected result, considering it is a well-established technique in other nonhuman primate species [Barnabe et al, 2002;Valle et al, 2004]. However, there are alternative techniques, such as penile vibrostimulation, a method reported for other small Neotropical primates, such as squirrel monkeys ( S. sciureus ) and common marmosets ( C. jacchus ), which resulted in better sperm quality in these species, with the advantage of no need for chemical restraint of the animals [Yeoman et al, 1998;Schneiders et al, 2004], but it should be appropriately tested and adapted to other species.…”
