HLA-Bw4-B*57 and Cw*18 alleles are associated with plasma viral load modulation in HIV-1 infected individuals in Salvador, Brazil

Abstract: Host genetic factors play an important role in mediating resistance to HIV-1 infection and may modify the course of infection. HLA-B alleles (Bw4 epitope; B*27 and B*57) as well as killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors have been associated with slow progression of HIV-1 infection. Objective: To evaluate the association between serological epitopes HLA-Bw4 and HLA-Bw6 and prognostic markers in AIDS. Methods: 147 HIV-infected individuals in Bahia, Northeast Brazil, were genotyped for HLA class I locus. HLA c… Show more

“…44 Silva et al noted an association between HLA Bw4-HLA B*57 and HLA Cw*18 with low HIV viral load in Brazilian patients. 45 A related study by Lazaryan et al demonstrated an association of low virus load and the presence of Cw*18 allele regardless of the presence or absence of the protective B*5703 allele in a Zambian subtype C HIV infected cohort. 46 HLA Bw4 and HLA C are ligands for NK cell receptors (KIRs) that stimulate cytotoxic activity of these effector cells.…”

“…1,2 HLA class I have an important role in the innate and adaptive immune responses during the course of HIV-1 infection. [3][4][5] The HLA-B locus is the most HLA-I polymorphic. Based on current estimates, there are over 4859 allelic variants of HLA-B.…”
