Nasal carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in university students

Abstract: In a study of university students, the percentage nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus was 40.8% (102/250). Of the isolates, MIC 50 of methicillin was 0.5 µg/mL and MIC 90 was 1 µg/mL. Six (5.8%) isolates were methicillin-resistant and carried the mecA gene. These results suggest that communityassociated methicillin-resistant S. aureus may be spreading in Brazil.

“…Our result, 9.04 % (n=14)of MRSA nasal carriage is higher than those documented in Netherland and Brazil afore mentioned [4,7]. Likewise, MRSA nasal carriage of Danish veterinary practitioners (means professionally exposed to animals) was 3.9% [13] which is similar to the MRSA carriage rate in the general population (healthy individuals and outside the healthcare environment) estimated to be less than 4 % [14][15].However, this recorded rate seems to be lower compared to those reported among veterinarians from international study (12.5%) [6], from UK veterinarians (12.3%) [5] and intriguingly among unexposed Malagasy population (14.8%) [9].…”

“…An international study reported that 12.5% (34/272) of veterinarians from nine country carried MRSA in the nares or their throat [6]. In a study of Brazilian university students, the percentage nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureuswas 40.8% with 5.8% of MRSA strains where all of them were susceptible to most of the antimicrobial agents tested [7].…”

“…In agreement with our results, S. aureus was isolated from nasal swabs of 102 (40.8%) of the 250 volunteers, 2.4% of them were CA-MRSA carriers in Brazil. 26 In Palestine in 2011, the nasal carriage of MRSA among the students was 2.5%. 7 In 2010, a total of 322 University students in Taiwan were screened and 2.2%, of them harboured MRSA.…”

“…Staphylococcus aureus can be found as a harmless colonizer of skin and mucosa, mainly the anterior nares, in 20%-60% of the population [1][2][3]. Colonization by this bacterium is one important predisposing factor for staphylococcal infections [1].…”
