Clinical, endoscopic and prognostic aspects of primary gastric non-hodgkin's lymphoma associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

Abstract: Primary gastric non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a co-morbidity that can be observed during the clinical course of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We evaluated the prevalence, clinical-evolutive aspects and form of endoscopic presentation of primary gastric NHL associated with AIDS. Two hundred and forty-three HIV patients were submitted to upper digestive endoscopy, with evaluation of clinical, endoscopic and histological data. A CD4 count was made by flow cytometry and viral load was determined in … Show more

“…Likewise, the author affirmed that this is the first study of its sort made in Peruvian population and the first concerning survival in NHL in Latin American population, defining relevant prognosis factors such as being ART-naïve, having low albumin levels, and the tumor staging [1]. As evidence, the last research regarding NHL and its prognostic factors was made in 2009 by Rezende et al [2]; there were not following investigations that comprised these topics until Cuellar [1]. This observation is relevant because it provides a perspective of the research status in other illnesses such as KS, where there is no precedent study respecting survival or prognostic factors.…”

“…NHL previously accounted for approximately 3% of AIDS-defining clinical conditions, but this proportion had declined. The incidence of PCNS lymphoma was highest; other types of lymphomas appear as case reports in the literature (Rich et al, 1992;Cappell and Botros, 1994;Rizzi et al, 2001;Doweiko et al, 2004;Khan et al, 2006;Mohan et al, 2007;Mani et al, 2008;Rezende et al, 2009;Kalogeropoulos et al, 2009;Li and Cheng, 2011). Previously, NHL accounted for approximately 3% of AIDS-defining clinical conditions, but this percentage has declined.…”
