Incidence and clinical characteristics of the infection by the Respiratory Syncytial Virus in children admitted in Santa Casa de São Paulo Hospital

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify the rate of infections due to RSV and other viruses in children. In addition we have analyzed demographic data and clinical characteristics of the RSV-positive patients comparing with patients infected by other respiratory viruses. We also described the seasonality of the RSV occurrence in a hospital in 37%). We divided the subjects in 3 groups: Group 1 RSV-Positive, Group 2 Other Positive Viruses and Group 3 Negative for Respiratory Virus. Mean age (months) was of 7.… Show more

“…GAGLIARDI et al (2009) in a study performed in the same geographical region (Brazilian southwest), found a similar autumn seasonality pattern 8 . Other viruses circulating during the same period in Brazil, such as HRSV 17 and HRV 20 , possibly lead physicians to misdiagnose some illnesses as HboV, it may also account for some coinfections.…”

“…Esses resultados estão de acordo com estudos realizados por Thomazelli et al 29 , nos quais um dos sintomas mais comuns foi tosse, observada em 86% dos casos de infecção respiratória. Pecchini et al 30 também encontraram como sintomas mais comuns tosse (92,3%) e coriza (64,7%). No entanto, nesse estudo e em outro realizado na Índia 31 , diferente dos nossos resultados, a febre também foi um sintoma comum, encontrado em altas porcentagens.…”

“…It was found in 41.8% of the cohort. A further study in the same area [25] performed indirect immuofluorescent assay and demonstrated that RSV contributed 73% of the viruses that were identified in the population less than 5 years of age admitted for severe respiratory illness. Although the studies were different in terms of enrollment the point is made that there is variability in diagnosis of viral infection in the same location at differing time periods.…”
