Immunogenicity of a 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine in elderly residents of a long-term care facility

Abstract: S. pneumoniae is a significant cause of community-acquired pneumonia in the elderly, and accounts for the majority of the pneumonia deaths among the elderly. We conducted this randomized double-blind study to evaluate the immune response to a 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine and the persistence of antibodies two years after the vaccination in an elderly population in Santiago, Chile. A total of 118 elderly nursing home residents received either the pneumococcal or a tetanus control vaccine. Serum … Show more

“…119,129,130 Interestingly, South African women infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)were more likely to develop IPD with pediatric serotypes compared with HIV-infected men, likely because of women's closer proximity to small children. 131 Widespread pneumococcal vaccination may reduce risk of IPD in closed populations 68,132 and the community at large. 23,55 Infants < 6 months old may be relatively protected via passive transfer of maternal antibodies during breast-feeding.…”

“…In this group, pneumonia is regarded a special category due to advanced age, numerous co-morbidities and non-specific, but often severe disease course, which all contribute to a high (30%) mortality rate (2). One of the main pathogens causing pneumonia in the group of elderly is S. pneumoniae ( Streptococcus pneumoniae ; 4-7). …”

“…En un estudio chileno se pudo demostrar la permanencia de los niveles de anticuerpos al cabo de dos años de seguimiento en adultos mayores de 60 años de edad 10 . La relación entre concentración sérica de anticuerpos y protección otorgada por la vacuna polisacárida no ha sido bien establecida 3,27 .…”
