H5N1 avian influenza virus: an overview

Abstract: Avian influenza virus (H5N1) emerged in Hong Kong in 1997, causing severe human disease. In recent years, several outbreaks have been reported in different parts of Asia, Europe and Africa, raising concerns of dissemination of a new and highly lethal influenza pandemic. Although H5N1 has not been capable of sustaining human-tohuman transmission, the ability of the virus to undergo variation due to mutations and reassortment, clearly poses the possibility of viral adaptation to the human species. For this reaso… Show more

“…The specter of an influenza pandemic continues to threaten, with annual outbreaks of highly-pathogenic H5N1 in birds [1] and continued sporadic human H5N1 cases and clusters [2] with some reports that suggested limited, non sustained human-to-human transmission of H5N1 viruses [3,4]. If a pandemic virus strain were to emerge, pre-pandemic vaccines would be available to some populations although of unknown efficacy, but development and distribution of initial doses of influenza vaccine specifically made against the pandemic strain would not be available for at least 4-6 months [5].…”

“…In addition, these viruses mutate from year to year to cause even worldwide pandemics (Ghedin et al 2005). In the 20th century, at least four pandemics of influenza occurred, which killed approximately 100 million people around the world at irregular intervals (Proença-Módena et al 2007). In 1997, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (H5N1) emerged in Hong Kong, causing severe human disease.…”

“…[1920] Avian influenza exists in both low-pathogenic and high-pathogenic forms differing in its inherent ability to harm its host, and its capacity to spread between and among various host species. Low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) does not cause any illness in domestic poultry while an H5 or H7 LPAI strain posses significant potential to evolve into a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain.…”
