Evaluation of blood stream infections by Candida in three tertiary hospitals in Salvador, Brazil: a case-control study

Abstract: Invasive infections caused by Candida spp. are an important problem in immunocompromised patients. There is scarce data on the epidemiology of blood stream candidiasis in Salvador, Brazil. This study evaluates the risk factors associated with candidemia, among patients admitted to three tertiary, private hospitals, in Salvador, Brazil. We conducted a case-control, retrospective study to compare patients with diagnosis of candidemia in three different tertiary hospitals in Salvador, Brazil. Patients were matche… Show more

“…Embora tenha sido observada uma maior proporção de candidemia por Candida glabrata (9%) comparado com os dados brasileiros 9 , o número pequeno da candidemias não permite uma conclusão definitiva. A epidemiologia de candidemia em centros do Nordeste brasileiro não é ainda muito conhecida 5 .…”

“…Among human gastrointestinal tract isolates 50-70% of total yeast isolates were identified as Candida albicans. Further, frequent isolates are C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, and C. glabrata, while C. kefyr and C. guilliermondii are found occasionally (3,7,8).…”

“…Among the risk factors of candidemia investigated in our study, only CVP catheterization was found as an independent risk factor in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. In case-control studies, the mortality rate varies between 49% and 55% [16,18,20]. In our study, the mortality rate was determined as 46.4%.…”

“…In our study, we have identified the Candida species as C. albicans (52.4%), C. parapsilosis (16.7%), C. glabrata (9.5%), C. tropicalis (7.1%), and C. krusei (4.8%), while 7.1% were non-typed non-albicans Candida species. A multicenter study from Brazil focusing on the risk factors of candidemia has found CVP catheterization, total parenteral nutrition, history of antibiotherapy, and chronic renal failure as the risk factors [20]. In a study conducted in Italy, the length of hospitalization, CVP catheterization, history of bacteremia, total parenteral nutrition, and chronic kidney failure were also observed to be independent risk factors [21].…”
