Varicella pneumonia in immunocompetent adults: report of two cases, with emphasis on high-resolution computed tomography findings

Abstract: We report two cases of varicella pneumonia in immunocompetent patients, with emphasis on high-resolution computer tomography manifestations. The predominant findings consisted of multiple bilateral nodules, ranging from 1-10 mm in diameter, with or without a surrounding halo of ground-glass attenuation. Other findings include ground-glass opacities, focal areas of consolidation and small pleural effusions.

“…Moreover, most hospitals lack the infrastructure to culture viruses or perform PCR based assays and technology [6]. It should be noted that in viral infections, PEs are usually small [6,[9][10][11][12][13], exudates [9] with predominantly mononuclear cells on the pleural fluid white blood cells differential [9,14], especially when thoracentesis was performed later in the course of the effusion development (specifically 48 h later) [6].…”

“…Compared to radiographic findings, CT findings of Varicella pneumonia in immunocompetent patients have been described as multiple nodules of soft-tissue densities ranging from 5 to 10 mm in diameter with no calcifications and appearing bilaterally [7][8][9]. Kim et al described three patients with Varicella pneumonia, and the CT scan findings from these patients showed nodules with a halo of ground-glass attenuation, patchy ground-glass attenuation, and coalescence of lesions [8].…”

“…Lymphadenopathy, reticular opacity, and pleural effusion can be found on occasion. On recovery progress, calcification can be found [14] . In this case, we found only infiltrate on both lungs.…”
