Identification of Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi isolated from healthy skin of symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs seropositive for leishmaniasis in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: Euthanasia of seropositive dogs has been one of the principal measures adopted by the Program for the Control of Leishmaniasis in Brazil for many years. However, its efficacy is currently being questioned. We obtained intact skin samples from 20 Leishmania-reactive dogs from the municipality of Rio de Janeiro that had been referred for euthanasia. The promastigote forms of Leishmania were isolated in culture from 18 of these animals. Fourteen of these isolates were identified as Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi… Show more

“…The successful infection of laboratory-bred L. longipalpis fed on two of three randomly selected dogs from our asymptomatic group 3 , however, tends to support the conclusion that dogs with inapparent CVL are of importance in the maintenance of AVL foci 21 . A similar conclusion was reached regarding the transmission of the closely related Leishmania (L.) infantum infantum in the Mediterranean region of the Old World, where the vector Phlebotomus perniciosus was successfully infected when fed on asymptomatic dogs 23 .…”

“…In two studies conducted in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, MADEIRA et al 16,17 isolated Leishmania from 18/20 and from 31/39 animals, respectively, using skin fragments obtained from dogs euthanized because of a suspicion of CVL for parasitological confirmation. In another study, the same authors reported a rate of isolation of 78.7% when skin samples from 394 dogs were evaluated 15 .…”

“…A presença de 50 a 70% de cães assintomáticos em áreas endêmicas, potencialmente infectantes para o vetor 12 , denota a importância dos inquéritos sorológicos caninos para que se antecipem as ações profiláticas, já que os casos caninos precedem a doença no homem 18 . Nesta investigação, a porcentagem obtida de cães assintomáticos foi de 56,2%, não divergindo do cenário encontrado no país.…”
