Antimicrobial activity of linezolid against Gram-positive cocci isolated in Brazil

Abstract: The new oxazolidinone linezolid and other antimicrobial agents used to treat Gram-positive infections were tested against 1,585 Gram-positive cocci; 1,260 staphylococci and enterococci isolates from patients hospitalized in Brazilian hospitals, and 325 S. pneumoniae isolates for patients with community acquired infections. Susceptibility testing was performed using broth microdilution according to NCCLS procedures. Linezolid was the most active compound and the only drug that inhibited 100% of the isolates at … Show more

“…All of our isolates had retained susceptibility to vancomycin and teicoplanin, consistent with previous studies [23,25-27,29], confirming that glycopeptides should be used as empiric therapy for serious staphylococcal infections while waiting for susceptibility testing results to come through [30]. This is likely related to low usage of these agents in Nepal due to high cost.…”

“…The predominant profile observed in this study just indicated sensibility to vancomycin and teicoplanin (phenotypic profile B), corroborating the fact that these glycopeptides remain as the reference therapy for serious infections caused by multi-resistant Grampositive strains [22]. Lineages with increased resistance to teicoplanin have been reported in Europe and United States [23].…”

“…However, increased resistance to teicoplanin has been reported overseas [ 37 40 ]. Thus, glycopeptides especially vancomycin can be used empirically for serious staphylococcal infections while waiting for susceptibility testing results to come through [ 41 ].…”
