Portuguese / English: www.scielo.br/reeusp RESUMEN La investigación tuvo como objetivo comprender cómo los cuidadores familiares vivencian la depresión de los adultos mayores, en su contexto cultural. Se realizó un estudio cualitativo de trayectoria etnográ-fica utilizando el referencial de Spradley. El universo cultural se constituyó con familiares, quienes ejercían el rol de cuidador, obteniéndose su participación a través de consentimiento informado. La enfermedad es percibida por los cuidadores como una limitación profunda en la calidad de vida del anciano, sumando soledad, tristeza y dolor. Los sentimientos de los pacientes deprimidos se hacen extensivos a los cuidadores, quienes también corren el riesgo de deprimirse. Las responsabilidades propias del cuidado también generan en los cuidadores sentimientos de culpa, lo cual los expone a un mayor grado de sufrimiento. Los familiares reconocen las formas de inicio de la enfermedad, sus atributos, las formas de tratamiento, y el estigma social asociado a la enfermedad mental y su rol fundamental de apoyo y cuidado en la recuperación. DESCRIPTORES ABSTRACTThe objective of the study was to understand how family caregivers experience the depression of older people in their care, within their cultural context. This is a qualitative study of ethnographic trajectory, performed using Spradley as the framework. The cultural universe consisted of relatives who performed the role of caregivers, who provided informed consent. Caregivers perceived the disease as a deep limitation on their way of living, involving loneliness, sadness and pity. The feelings of the depressed patients extend to the caregiver, who also faces the risk of suffering from depression. The responsibilities of caring also generate feelings of guilt that produce more suffering. Relatives recognize the onset of the disease, their attributes, the forms of treatment, and the social stigma associated with this mental disease and that they have a fundamental role in providing support and care in the recovery process.

Factors associated with the successful aging of the socially-active elderly in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre Fatores associados ao envelhecimento bem-sucedido de idosos socialmente ativos da região metropolitana de Porto Alegre A b s t r a c t Objective: To identify the factors associated with aging of the socially-active elderly in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving a sample of 400 elderly subjects. Through a conglomerate analysis using the combined results of the Flanagan Scale and the quality of life assessment instrument developed by the World Health Organization (WHOQOL-100), the subjects classified as presenting a higher quality of life were considered to have aged successfully. Subjects were considered socially active if they participated in groups for elderly people or engaged in any activities outside of the nuclear family.Research data were collected using the following instruments: the Flanagan Quality of Life Scale; the World Health Organization WHOQOL-100 quality of life assessment instrument; Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS); Geriatric Depression Scale, 15-item version (GDS-15, abridged from Yesavage),16 as well as a form used to collect participant information. Structured interviews were carried out with the help of psychology, nursing and physical education students, who had been previously trained to that end. Interviews were carried out between May and December 2002.All data were initially stored in an Excel spreadsheet and later transferred to and analyzed using the SPSS program, version 11.5.The cutoff points on the GDS-15 scale for elderly subjects were: scores lower than 5 indicated normality regarding depression; scores from 5 to 10 indicated mild to moderate depression; scores higher than 10 indicated severe depression.We preliminarily conducted two methodological studies: one to validate the Flanagan Quality of Life Scale and one to validate the WHOQOL-100. A cluster analysis was carried out, using as entry variables the predicted factorial analysis scores. In accordance with this analysis, the elderly subjects were classified into two groups: superior quality of life and inferior quality of life. 17In this study, we defined successful aging as having a superior quality of life, meeting the criterion established by the cluster analysis, which was carried out using the Flanagan Quality of Life Scale and the WHOQOL-100. Similarly, those classified as having an inferior quality of life were considered normally aging elderly subjects (presenting ordinary or usual aging). Statistical analysisUsing the Student's t-test for the study of two independent samples, we compared the two groups (superior quality of life versus inferior quality of life) regarding the following variables: age, hopelessness, depression and the factors retained in the factorial analysis of the Flanagan Quality of Life Scale and WHOQOL-100. A pertinência da noção de ambiências urbanas para o tema dos direitos dos idosos: perspectivas brasileiras ResumoNo Brasil, o reconhecimento das funções sociais da cidade e do dever de amparo aos idosos foi um dos avanços da Constituição Federal de 1988 (artigos 182 e 230). Em um contexto de urbanização e de envelhecimento populacional, um Estatuto da Cidade e um Estatuto do Idoso foram também adotados pelo legislador brasileiro. O presente trabalho, baseado em pesquisa exploratória de natureza qualitativa, teve por objetivo investigar se a noção de ambiência urbana vem sendo empregada ou se mostra pertinente para a análise e a efetivação dos direitos do idoso no Brasil. Foram feitas buscas nas bases de dados IusData e periódicos CAPES e LILACS, com os termos "ambiência" e "idoso" e seus respectivos plurais nos títulos e resumos, período livre até fevereiro de 2014, encontrando-se apenas um resultado, na área da Enfermagem. Além das principais leis federais relacionadas às cidades e aos idosos, e de leis orgânicas municipais (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro e Porto Alegre), a pesquisa também se apoiou em referencial teórico nas áreas da Gerontologia, do Direito e da Arquitetura e Urbanismo. A ideia de ambiência, que se refere a um ambiente experimentado, situando a experiência do sujeito no centro da reflexão, revela-se oportuna para se pensar na cidade enquanto espaço que reflita a heterogeneidade da velhice e que propicie um envelhecimento ativo e digno. Ainda que essa noção apareça apenas timidamente em algumas leis urbanísticas municipais, não sendo legalmente definida ou habitualmente empregada pelos juristas, as ambiências urbanas são intimamente relacionadas com o Direito, já que são, ao mesmo tempo, determinadas pelo Direito (entre outros fatores) e determinantes para a efetivação de direitos. AbstractIn Brazil, the recognition of the city's social functions as well as the duty of supporting the elderly was one of the innovations introduced by the 1988 Federal Constitution (articles 182 and 230).
