Objective: Describing the demographic and epidemiological aspects of mortality from cancer of the penis. Methods: A cross-sectional study consisting of 183 deaths registered in a public information system on mortality that had penile cancer as the primary cause of mortality. It was used descriptive statistics and the mortality rate was calculated. Results: The mean coefficient of mortality was 0.45/100,000 that is an increase of 19.04%. The demographic data revealed a higher prevalence in men aged 60 years or older (50.8%), brown (54.1%), married (47.6%), retired (24%) and residents of the metropolitan region (44.8%). Conclusion: The demographic and epidemiological aspects revealed increase of mortality rates from cancer in the penis. ResumoObjetivo: Descrever os aspectos demográficos e epidemiológicos da mortalidade por câncer no pênis. Métodos: Estudo transversal constituído por 183 óbitos registrados em um sistema público de informação sobre mortalidade que tiveram como causa básica de morte o câncer no pênis. Utilizou-se estatística descritiva e foi calculado o coeficiente de mortalidade. Resultados: O coeficiente de mortalidade médio foi de 0,45/100 mil, com acréscimo de 19,04%. Os dados sociodemográficos revelaram um maior acometimento nos homens na faixa etária de 60 anos ou mais (50,8%), da cor parda (54,1%), casados (47,6%), aposentados (24%) e residentes em região metropolitana (44,8%). Conclusão: Os aspectos demográficos e epidemiológicos revelaram aumento no coeficiente de mortalidade por câncer no pênis.

This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study that analyzes knowledge about penile cancer among patients with human papillomavirus (HPV), monitored at the Reference Center for Urological Treatment of Arcoverde, Pernambuco, Brazil. The population of this study consisted of 27 men with a medical diagnosis of genital HPV infection within the period between 2008 and 2013. Age ranged between 20 and 49 years-old and most men were brown-skinned, married, and had a low socioeconomic status; also, most individuals were infected for more than 1 year and there was recurrence of HPV infection. We identified that 77.8% of the patients were unaware of the relationship between HPV and penile cancer. In addition to HPV infection, smoking and unprotected sex stood out as risk factors for penile cancer. The prevalence of penile cancer in the sample was 4%. We concluded that HPV patients knew about penile cancer, but they did not associate this disease with the need to adopt mutilating treatments.

Resumo Objetivou-se analisar os casos de doenças sexualmente transmissíveis (DST) atendidos em uma unidade primária de saúde em Fortaleza, Ceará, estudo retrospectivo que analisou 5.590 prontuários de casos de DST atendidos nos anos de 1999 a 2009. Os dados foram coletados de março a junho de 2010 e analisados pelo SPSS 18.0. Pessoas jovens com boa escolaridade e que tiveram múltiplos parceiros sexuais nos últimos três meses apresentaram mais úlcera e verruga. Encontrou-se associação entre apresentar verruga e ter resultado reagente para o HIV e apresentar úlcera e ter resultado reagente de VDRL. Quando analisados por sexo, as mulheres apresentaram mais úlcera, verruga, mais de uma síndrome genital no momento da consulta e aceitaram mais realizar os exames de VDRL e HIV. Já os homens tiveram mais resultado reagente para o HIV. Homens e mulheres com DST apresentaram especificidades comportamentais que os tornam mais vulneráveis ao HIV e sífilis.
