OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to know the understanding of Oral health indicators recommended by the Ministry of Health by dentists in the family health strategy of the state of Ceará in 2008. METHODS: It is a descriptive, cross-sectional study in which it was used a questionnaire to obtain the data concerning the way information on oral health actions performed in Family Health Care Units and other social spaces are registered, as well as investigate their knowledge about oral health indicators. The calculation of the sample of dentist-surgeons adopted an absolute sampling error of 6.8% and a significance level of 5%, resulting in an initial sample of 175 dentists; however, only 159 participated in this study according to the inclusion criteria. For instance, they should have been working in the service in the period from 2001 to 2007. In all, 32 cities participated in the research, distributed in 18 Regional Health Cells selected by drawing lots. The data were processed in the program SPSS version 17.0 and considered statistically significant the inferential analyses with p < 0.05. RESULTS: it was observed that there are differences between the interpretation of the indicators objectives and the data relating to oral health actions recorded by dentist-surgeons from the Family Health Strategy. They also differ from the guidelines of the Ministry of Health. CONCLUSION: The pregnant present some knowledge about oral health that can be improved by means of educational, preventive and healing programs. This group exert big it influences in the family ambit, could act as agents multipliers and avoiding the child's precocious contamination.

Percepção da saúde bucal em mulheres com perdas dentárias extensas Perception of oral health in women with extensive dental losses ResumoEste escrito tem por objetivo analisar a percepção de mulheres com perdas dentárias extensas sob o olhar da bucalidade. A pesquisa foi realizada com mulheres com essas características em uma cidade de pequeno porte no estado de Santa Catarina. A entrevista semiestruturada produziu narrativas que foram gravadas e transcritas. Depois da coleta dos dados, realizou-se a análise das informações encontradas, a fim de interpretar os dados obtidos. Os dados organizados e sistematizados resultaram em seis categorias temáticas: condição socioeconômica, representação social da prótese dentária, prática odontológica, sofrimento e dor, consequên-cias e limitações, e gênero. Algumas percepções são bem marcantes no grupo estudado: extrair os dentes para colocar prótese dentária era motivo de alegria para algumas entrevistadas; as próteses eram desejadas, pois proporcionavam dentes bonitos. Outro achado importante refere-se à extração de dentes sadios, apenas no caso das mulheres, como preparação para o casamento. O estudo evidencia a necessidade de aprofundamento da compreensão dos eventos que ocorrem na boca, seja no cuidado bucal ou nas práticas cotidianas, no intuito de melhorar o entendimento desse espaço e, ao cabo, reunir elementos para pensar e produzir outra clínica, que inclua os sujeitos com suas diferenças e diversidade cultural. The survey was conducted with women with extensive tooth loss in a small town in the state of Santa Catarina. The semi-structured interview produced narratives were recorded and transcribed. After collecting the data, we carried out the analysis of the information found in order to interpret the data obtained during the investigation. Organized and systematized data resulted in six thematic categories: socioeconomic condition, social representation of dental prosthesis, odontological practice, suffering and pain, consequences and limitations, gender. Some perceptions are well marked in the studied group, such as extracting teeth to put dental prosthesis was considered a cause for joy for some interviewees; the prostheses were coveted because they provide beautiful teeth. Another important finding refers to the extraction of healthy teeth, only for women, in preparation for marriage. The study highlights the need for deepening the understanding of the events that occur in the mouth, either in oral care or in daily practices in order to improve the understanding of this space and, gather elements to think and produce another clinic that includes the subjects with their differences and cultural diversity. With the aim of contributing to the current curricular transformation of Brazilian Dentistry courses, this study describes the training of dental surgeons considering the needs of the public Unified Health System (SUS -Sistema Único de Saúde). We focus on the health care model currently in force and emphasize the idea that so as to attain the principles of this model, a shift in the training of instructors who lecture in Dentistry should occur. Some aspects of the training of such instructors, together with the implementation of the National Curricular Guidelines in Dentistry courses, are discussed, and the professional profiles of graduates from Brazilian dental schools are analyzed. We conclude our work by considering some elements that should be observed in order to improve the training process so that it will lead to the training of dental surgeons able to act within a new perspective, that of health promotion.Key words: Dental education; health promotion; dental faculty ResumoO presente artigo apresenta um retrato da formação dos cirurgiões-dentistas, objetivando contribuir com a atual transformação curricular dos cursos de Odontologia brasileiros, considerando as necessidades do Sistema Único de Saúde. Para tanto, resgata o modelo de atenção vigente na saúde e enfatiza que para o cumprimento de seus princípios é necessário mudar primeiramente a formação dos formadores, isto é, dos professores que atuam na educação superior na área odontológica. Nesse sentido, discute alguns aspectos da formação desses docentes, assim como a instituição das Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais nos Cursos de Odontologia. Analisa, ainda, o perfil profissional do egresso das Faculdades de Odontologia brasileiras e conclui considerando alguns pontos que devem ser respeitados para que se agregue valor ao processo de formação, de modo que este possa dar conta de formar cirurgiões-dentistas capazes de atuar dentro de uma nova perspectiva, a promoção da saúde.
