Purpose The Brazilian Government created the Bolsa Familia program to combat poverty and the insertion of so many children into the labor market. This program is an income transfer program subject to certain conditions such as a minimum school attendance for children under 17 years of age. In 2006, almost half of the people with an income per capita of R$300.00 (US$139.53) per month declared that they received this benefit. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of Bolsa Familia on child labor in Brazil in 2006. Design/methodology/approach The authors used a propensity score matching model with data from the National Household Sample Survey PESQUISA NACIONAL POR AMOSTRA DE DOMICÍLIOS (PNAD), for 2006. Findings Results indicate that the program increased the number of hours of child labor in Brazil. However, this outcome might be explained by the fact that those families who received Bolsa Familia were also those with higher socioeconomic vulnerability. Thus, they need to guarantee their survival with the income generated via child labor. Social implications The Brazilian Government needs to invest not only in monetary transfer policies but also in the improvement of the job market to create opportunities for the social development of children. Originality/value The contribution of the paper is the investigation into the effect of the Bolsa Familia program on the average time allocated to child labor; the authors find that this time allocation could be reduced by requiring a compulsory school attendance.

Objective: to learn the perceptions of elderly persons in palliative care regarding coping with aging and illness. Method: an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative study was carried out. The study included 11 elderly persons in palliative care because of oncologic disease. Semi-structured interviews were carried out which were analyzed with the aid of the ALCESTE software. Results: two axes were identified from the content analysis. The first, Resist to Survive and Live, has two categories: the first, aging with integrity, portrays the positive perception of the participants regarding the aging process, and coping strategies used to deal with aging and with illness; the other category, resilient development, refers to the life trajectories of the participants and the adversities of the process of development and aging. The second axis, Resist to Die Well, has only one category and refers to the perceptions of the elderly about the stress related to illness. Conclusion: the results show that the perceptions of aging and falling ill involved resilience, as the participants focused on what they had gained rather than their losses. In this context, they used resilient coping strategies: spiritual support, cognitive restructuring, and acceptance.

Esta pesquisa analisa as consequências do trabalho infantil sobre o rendimento futuro do trabalho, transmitidas indiretamente através do nível de escolaridade. A análise de mediação causal, desenvolvida por Imai, Keele e Tingley (2010), foi aplicada aos dados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD) de 2014. Os resultados evidenciam que as perdas salarias sofridas pelos trabalhadores brasileiros que ingressaram precocemente no mercado de trabalho não se devem exclusivamente ao fato de ter trabalho na infância, mas também são explicadas pelo prejuízo educacional sofrido devido à inserção ocupacional prematura, a qual é responsável por 80% do efeito total estimado. Os resultados também mostram que o efeito mediação ganha força nas regiões Norte, Sudeste e Nordeste do país, onde a penalização de renda, explicada pelo efeito negativo do trabalho infantil no acúmulo de capital humano, é estimada em 28,2%, 16,8% e 16%, respectivamente.
