Show more

“…A follow-up in ovine model of ONFH is not possible because the injury induced presents spontaneous resolution. Our data are in accordance to previous studies, which successfully applied the central decompression technique associated with autologous bone marrow cells in humans 17,28 . We also showed that the procedure performed in this study is safe and does not lead to bone fractures or to the appearance of tumors, and that the cells used for treatment are still alive weeks after the procedure.…”

“…In Brazil, Daltron et al 28 performed the treatment of ONFH with mononuclear bone marrow cells in sickle cell disease in eight patients. After eigth months, seven of the eight patients reported improvement from symptoms.…”

“…These results and that of Daltro et al (14) encouraged us to try stem cell therapy alternative to early THA in young patients. In our study we deviated from the reported procedure of standard core decompression with multiple drill holes and using bone marrow concentrate or BMMC and found our short term results to be better.…”

“…Secondly the radiological changes on the MRI showed marked improvement in with the new bone formation and reduction of the avascular area. Two previous studies in SCD patients have reported the results of bone marrow concentrate in 1 patient (8) and 8 patients by Daltro et al (14) used autologous bone-marrow mononuclear cells implantation and found to be safe and suggested an efficacious treatment modality. Even though our patient number was small and we did not attempt to include FICAT III stage, but we did not carry out and decompression, still the results were encouraging.…”

“…This result confirms the efficacy of the technique. 9-12 The decrease in the volume injected by the Sepax® processing is important in procedures where the introduction of more than 100 ml of aspirate can be impeditive, as is the case of femoral neck necrosis therapy, 21 in the bone repair of smaller patients or smaller size bones. Theoretically, as a disadvantage of this system, we encounter the fact that the injection of red blood cells with subsequent release of iron can be an adverse condition for cell proliferation, as observed in vitro .…”
