CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: The methodology and relevance of articles are among the keystones for promoting their citation and increasing journals' impact factors. Study designs appropriate for answering the questions and adequate sample sizes have the aim of reducing the risk of bias. This study evaluated the articles published in two Brazilian journals of orthopedics and sports medicine that were recently indexed in the ISI Web of Science, regarding study design, sample size calculation, randomization and blinding. DESIGN AND SETTING:Descriptive study at Brazilian Cochrane Center. METHODS:Through a manual search, all original manuscripts published in 2007 in Acta Ortopédica Brasileira and Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte were selected and evaluated.RESULTS: All the 60 articles published in Acta Ortopédica Brasileira and the 87 articles in Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte were included and evaluated. The commonest design in Acta Ortopédica Brasileira was experimental studies (n = 19) and in Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte, update or review articles (n =14). Sample calculations were seen in a minority of the articles. None of the eight clinical trials published presented sample calculations or adequate randomization processes. Three were described as blinded, but none described the measures taken to prevent disclosure of the allocation concealment.CONCLUSIONS: Publication of studies of good methodological quality other than review and experimental studies should be strongly encouraged among Brazilian journals, with the aim of increasing their citation and therefore their impact factor. RESUMO CONTEXTO E OBJETIVO:A qualidade metodológica e a pertinência dos artigos estão entre algumas das peças fundamentais para promover sua citação e aumentar o fator de impacto da revista. Um desenho de estudo apropriado para responder às perguntas e uma amostra de tamanho adequado visam reduzir o risco de viés. Este estudo avaliou os artigos publicados em duas revistas brasileiras das áreas de ortopedia e medicina esportiva recentemente indexadas no ISI Web of Science, com relação a desenho do estudo, cálculo do tamanho amostral, aleatorização e mascaramento. TIPO DE ESTUDO E LOCAL: Estudo descritivo no Centro Cochrane do Brasil.MÉTODOS: Por meio de pesquisa manual, foram selecionados e avaliados todos os manuscritos originais publicados em 2007 na Acta Ortopédica Brasileira e Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte. RESULTADOS:Todos os 60 artigos publicados na Acta Ortopédica Brasileira e os 87 artigos da Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte foram incluídos e avaliados. RESUMoEsta nova série de artigos tem por objetivo levar aos leitores nacionais e internacionais algumas das mais importantes contribuições provenientes da literatura médica brasileira recente. Embora possa parecer que não tenham relação direta com a Medicina do Exercício e do Esporte, são trabalhos que podem oferecer suporte a muitas linhas de pesquisa nessa área. Os artigos originais mais relevantes são selecionados por experientes editores, a quem solicitamos que escolham palavras-chave para que sejam destacadas para chamar a atenção do leitor. Para facilitar a leitura, os artigos são organizados por área de interesse. Para aproveitar ao máximo o limitado espaço editorial, não são incluídos os nomes dos autores dos artigos. Entretanto, a referência completa é oferecida ao final do artigo. O resultado final traz o que há de melhor do artigo, seguido de uma sintética interpretação pessoal. Endereçado ao médico ocupado, esperamos que esta inciativa possa contribuir para o sucesso da translação do conhecimento da evidência científica para a prática clínica. Palavras-chave: medicina esportiva, cardiologia, ortopedia, nutrição. aBStRaCtThis brand-new series of articles aims at delivering to national and international readers some of the cutting-edge contributions from the Brazilian medical literature. Some of them may not be directly related to the area, but they can be the grounding for scientific research in the field of Sports and Exercise Medicine. Recently, papers published in the main Brazilian medical journals are carefully selected and analyzed by skilled medical editors. In addition, we asked editors to choose keywords to be highlighted in order to call the reader' s attention. Articles are organized by area of interest to facilitate reading. To get the most of the limited available editorial space we did not include the names of the authors of the related articles in the text itself, but a complete reference guide is provided at the end of the article. The result carries the best from the original paper accompanied by a personal interpretation. Directed to the busy medical doctor, we hope that this initiative may contribute to the successful translation of knowledge from scientific evidence to clinical practice.

Introduction: The Girdlestone resection arthroplasty (GRA) is a salvage procedure for a recurrent or persistent prosthetic joint infection of the hip. This procedure negatively impacts the functional outcome and presumably also diminishes health status (HS) and quality of life (QOL). However, studies investigating the QOL after GRA are lacking. This cross-sectional study compares patients with a Girdlestone situation after an infected total hip prosthesis with a normative population with regard to HS and QOL.Methods: Patients with a permanent GRA were suitable to be enrolled in the study. Subjects completed the World Health Organization Quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) and the EuroQol 5 dimension 3 level version (EQ-5D-3L). Scores were compared with data from the normal population, from patients with a lower limb amputations and data from patients with a myocardial infarction.Results: Sixty-three patients who underwent GRA between January 2000 and March 2017 completed the questionnaire. The median time between the GRA and competing the questionnaire was 48 months (4 -436). All WHOQOL-BREF domain scores were significantly lower in GRA patients compared to the normative data (p<0.001), patients with myocardial infarction or lower limb amputation. EQ-5D-3L results showed that HS was significantly impaired in GRA patients when compared to normative data (p<0.001) and also impaired when compared to data from lower limb amputations and myocardial infarctions.Conclusion: HS and QOL scores in patients with a permanent Girdlestone situation after an infected hip prosthesis are significantly lower than Dutch normative scores. Patients with a permanent Girdlestone situation scored even lower on HS than patients with a lower limb amputation or a myocardial infarction.
