Background: Pedicles of lumbar vertebrae are commonly fractured especially in older age group due to osteoporosis and need surgical screws fixation for stabilization of vertebrae. Different studies are being conducted in different populations to know the normal range of pedicle diameters. These diameters can guide the clinicians approaching lumber vertebra pedicles for trans pedicular screw fixation. Aim of study: was to study the vertical, horizontal and interpedicular diameters of pedicles of lumbar vertebrae from anteroposterior radiographs of lumbosacral region. Materials and Methods: The pedicles of the lumbar vertebrae were measured for their horizontal (width) and vertical(height) diameters from plain Antero posterior radiographs of the adult Punjabi males. Mean and standard deviation was noted for the dimensions of each lumbar vertebra from L1 to L5. Results: Horizontal diameter of the pedicle goes on increasing from L1 to L4 vertebrae, less at L5 vertebra. Vertical height of the pedicle goes on increasing from L1 to L3 vertebrae and slightly reduces in L4 and L5. Interpedicular distance is less in L1 and almost equal in L2, L3, L4 and larger in L5 vertebrae. No statistically significant difference is seen in height and width of the pedicle on right and left side. Conclusion: This data can help the surgeons for performing safe transpedicular surgeries in Punjab zone.

Pedicle screw is employed in several cases of spine disorders such as fractures, pseudarthrosis, spondylolisthesis, degenerative changes among others. Its essence is to fix the vertebral body in position until fusion is complete. The success of this technique depends on factors like choice of size of screw for a particular pedicle size and shape. Thus, adequate knowledge of the morphometry of lumbar pedicle may avert intraoperative and postoperative complications associated with this technique, especially, neurological impairments. In this study, we determined the vertical and horizontal diameters, interpedicular distance and gender differences of 180 lumbar vertebral pedicles (140 male, 40 female pedicles) using digital vernier calipers. Results revealed a significant increase in pedicle height and width from L2 to L5. Interpedicular distance increased significantly down the vertebrae from L2 to L5. Mean vertical and horizontal diameters, interpedicular distance were not significantly different in both sexes. This study recommends a thorough check of individual's spinal anatomy in pre-operative assessments.

Introduction: As a result of the increased utilization of neurosurgical arthroscopic techniques, investigations into population and sex-specific trends of anatomical considerations have become increasingly important. This study aimed to investigate and describe aspects of the neuroanatomical morphometry of lumbar spines in a cadaveric and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sample. Materials and Methods: Twenty white adult (>18 years) cadavers (9 males; 11 females) were obtained under Ethical clearance. The lumbar regions were dissected and the position of the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and dimensions of Kambin's triangle were determined. Twenty-six black adult (>18 years) MRI scans (17 males; 9 females) were obtained from an Academic Hospital and were used to determine the dimensions of the neural foramen and the DRGs within. Results: The ganglia were mostly at the midline of the caudal pedicle. Similar to previous studies, the diagonal measurement from Kambin's triangle was the largest and the vertical measurement the shortest. Skeletal and soft-tissue measurements indicated distinct trends when moving caudolaterally in the spine. Soft-tissue parameters from the current study were within the upper limits of those from previous studies, whereas skeletal parameters were in agreement with those reported by previous authors. Conclusions: Results from this study suggest a variation of certain parameters between studies with varying population groups and therefore supports the need for and the importance of possible population-specific trends of anatomical parameters considered during surgical procedures.
