Abstract: . Abstract: In order to evaluate the biodegradability of four anionic surfactants (LAS, SOS, n-SOBS, STPBS) in sea water, 19-day biodegradation tests were conducted, according to the method required by the Health Ministry for approval of commercial products. This method was modified for testing in sea water, as it originally had been described for freshwater. The modifications were considered sufficient as the microorganisms remain active till the end of the test. The results suggested that the biodegradation… Show more

“…In addition, salinity increases the concentration of humic substance in estuarine areas due to adsorption or aggregation with particles (Baalousha et al, 2006) and changes the ionic nature of surfactants by neutralizing anionic surfactant compounds. Surfactant adsorption in salt water might be due to changes in the partition with divalent cations, such as Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Cu 2+ (Hong et al, 2013;Jeon et al, 2010;Mastroti et al, 1998). Surfactants are degraded in wastewater treatment but some end up in the sediment (Ivankovic & Hrenovic, 2010).…”
