Brazilian sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis) spawning in the southeast Brazilian Bight over the period 1976-1993

Abstract: Based on sampling over the period 1976-1993 in the southeast Brazilian Bight, the distribution of spawning of the Brazilian sardine (Sardinella brasi/iensis) is described in relation to environmental conditions. The area of intense spawning occurs in the southern part of the bight where coastal upwelling was less /Tequent. Spawning intensity showed high interannllal variation and the egg abundance in the survey area ranged /Tom 99 billion eggs in the January 1988 cruise to 4669 billion eggs in the January 1981… Show more

“…The Southern Brazilian Continental Shelf (SBCS) is known as one of the more productive areas for fisheries in Brazilian waters [ Haimovici , ]. Many authors reported a strong relationship between the SBCS environmental variability and the Brazilian sardine ( Sardinella brasiliensis ) biological cycle and fisheries [ Matsuura , ; Sunyé and Servain , ; Cergole et al ., ; Legey and Jablonski , ; Gigliotti et al ., ; Soares et al ., ; Dias et al ., ; D'agostini et al ., ].…”

“…Matsuura [] was one of the first authors to study the relationship between sardine fisheries and water masses in the SBCS. Their study described that the absence or the weakness of the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) intrusions from the shelf break into the continental shelf is a very important factor controlling the Brazilian sardine recruitment and catches.…”

“…Though upwelling around CF has been reported in winter [ Moser and Gianesella‐Galvão , ], the more frequent and intense events are observed in summer and spring. The later events can influence the position of the Brazilian sardine spawning areas [ Matsuura , ] and the algal distribution [ Guimaraens and Coutinho , ].…”

“…It was only after 1977 that studies started to look at the reproductive strategy of the S. brasiliensis , including the spatial distribution of eggs and larval development (Isaac‐Nahum et al , 1988; Saccardo & Rossi‐Wongtschowski, 1991). The only comprehensive study of their distribution and egg production in the SBB was reported by Matsuura (1998) based on systematic samplings during nine spawning seasons between 1976 and 1993. He found high interannual variation in the estimated number of eggs, ranging from 99 to 4669 × 10 12 eggs, mostly concentrated in the southern portion of the SBB.…”
