Microalgae of the continental shelf off Paraná State, southeastern Brazil: a review of studies

Abstract: The paper reviews the taxonomic and ecological works on marine microalgae (phytoplankton and microphytobenthos) off Paraná State, Southeastern Brazil. Various studies refer to the taxonomy of benthic diatoms. Few descriptive field works in coastal and adjacent shelf waters contribute to the understanding of phytoplankton dynamics in coastal and shelf areas. Patterns of geographic distribution and changes in the phytoplankton community are described in relation to water masses and seasonal variations in the hyd… Show more

“…The trophic index -TRIX has been effective in diagnosing the state of eutrophication in various coastal lagoons (BRANDINI;FERNANDES, 1996;COELHO;GAMITO;PÉREZ-RUZAFA, 2007;CAÑEDO-ARGÜELLES et al, 2012;COTOVICZ, 2013;ACQUAVITA et al, 2015). The results obtained by these authors showed that the index satisfactorily represented the variations found in the concentrations of the dissolved forms of nitrogen, and total phosphorus, of the reduced forms of nitrogen, of the reduction of dissolved oxygen concentrations and increased concentrations of chlorophyll --a.…”

“…The proximity of transects SSB1 and SSB2 to the coast may favour the occurrence of Johannesbaptistia sp., due to its association with an environment with higher loads of organic matter (Cohen et al, 1986), which is also commonly observed in tropical environments upon presence of river inflows (Bauer et al,, 2008). The genus Thrichodesmium characterizes high productivity in the oceanic region (Gallon et al, 1996) and occurs from the northeast of Brazil (Koening & Macedo, 1999) to the southeastern and southern (Brandini & Fernandes, 1996), but with low density in Subantarctic Water (Brandini, 1988).…”
