Inclusion of Protected Fat in Diets on the Milk Production and Composition of Saanen Goats

Abstract: According on the fat source included in the diets for goats, the milk production can be increased and milk fatty acid composition can be improved. This study was conducted to evaluate the inclusion of protected fat (CSFA - calcium salts of fatty acids) in the diets of lactating Saanen goats on milk production and composition. Five Saanen goats (63.23 ± 9.08 kg body weight and 105 ± 3 days of lactation) were distributed in a Latin square design (5 × 5) with five diets: control (without the addition of CSFA) and… Show more

“…The dry matter intake (DMI) was not influenced by the addition of fat in the diets (Table 4), which is in agreement with the findings of Molina et al (2015), who supplemented with 25 g of calcium salts of long chain fatty acids kg -1 of DM; Hosam (2011), who supplemented with 50 g of calcium salts kg -1 of DM; Silva, Rodrigues, Branco et al (2007), who used 6.5% EE of soya oil, soya bean and calcium salts; and Possamai et al (2015), who used calcium salts of fatty acids in up to 2.8 Mcal of metabolizable energy kg -1 of DM in the diet of Saanen goats, without affecting the intake.…”

“…This result with low H/H is influenced by the high content of myristic (14I:0) and palmitic acid (16I:0), which represent more than 55% of the total fatty acids in the treatment of 'dulce de leche' . As for the other fatty acids, significant concentrations (13.56 to 14.86 g/100 g lipids) of short-chain fatty acids (4I:0 to 10I:0) are noted that are characteristic of goat milk, as demonstrated by Molina et al (2015).…”

“…All measured blood parameters and hematology were within the reported reference ranges for healthy cows (Jerry Kaneko et al, 2008). The replacement did not affect the concentrations of urea-N and creatinine, indicating unaffected glomerular filtration in the kidney or kidney function (Hosten, 1990), and a satisfactory metabolic status and an adequate provision of amounts of N and energy by the diets (Molina et al, 2015). Additionally, treatments did not affect the concentrations of ALT and AST, which were within reference ranges for healthy cows (Jackson and Cockcroft, 2007), indicating minimal effects of treatments on liver enzymes as evidences of the absence of negative effects on liver function.…”
