Show more

“…Nevertheless, besides the high variability, by the end of 2012/2013 the levels were lower compared with the previous years, except for the Basin of Alvalade aquifer. The concentration of total phosphorus in groundwater is not related to the geology, due to the scarcity of this compound in igneous and metamorphic rocks, requiring other sources, including anthropogenic activities and degradation of organic matter (Menezes et al 2014). The high value detected during the hydrological year of 2012/2013 was observed at a dry land crop field and perhaps it was a particular situation.…”

“…Traditional shifting cultivation, extensive grasslands and agro-ecosystems usually have a lower probability of subsurface contamination (Menezes et al 2014). Therefore, an appropriate soil management should be adjusted to each situation, taking into account the aquifer matrix and the overlying soil.…”

“…Several factors influence water quality of a watershed, such as rainfall, vegetation cover, topography, geology, as well as the type, use, and management of the soil located in the river basin (MARQUES, 2016;VERONEZ, 2011); UNESCO, 1998). Contamination of the underground springs is due to a series of factors related to the disorderly growth of the cities, inadequate disposition of residues, lack of sanitary sewage systems, and the lack of urban planning (MENEZES, 2014;LAZZERINI, 2013;LOBLER, 2013;CUNHA;SHIRAIWA, 2011, MERTEN, 2002.…”

“…In addition to increasing the consumption of groundwater, population growth tends to increase groundwater pollution. The expansion of human activities modifies groundwater quality and availability (HOWARD, 2002;MENEZES et al, 2014;COSTA et al, 2015a;MENG et al, 2015).…”
