Show more

“…The sediments, although natural components of water bodies, can modify aspects of the waterway hydrology when deposited in great amounts. This is especially the case when the phenomenon of sedimentation occurs, which can reduce light penetration in the euphotic zone of the water column, drastically affecting primary production and consequently population dynamics (Neves et al, 2006).…”

“…At a watershed level, the rainy season increases the river's flow measurement and the velocity of its current, which is associated with the re-suspension of sediment particles (Christofoletti, 1981) and the transportation of solutes caused by erosion of the river margins (Neves et al, 2006), thereby increasing the turbidity of the water. Several studies have shown the influence of turbidity and suspended sediments on the life cycle of aquatic animals (Henley et al, 2000;Poole and Downing, 2004;Österling et al, 2010), specially for suspended sediment which is the main concern of this study.…”

“…Shafii and Smedt [27] used a multi-objective approach with a compromise using two permanence measures for equal attention to low and high flows, comparing with single objective optimization approaches for a distributed hydrological model (WetSpa) [59] . Many studies have discussed the use of multi-objective functions [26,27,28,49,60,61,62] .…”

“…One study evaluated the biogeodynamics of pesticides employed in sugarcane production and stated that SWAT can adequately simulate herbicide behavior, when calibrated and validated [62] . Nutrient cycling and transport simulations were conducted as part of a study conducted for Bonito river subbasin [59,61] in the Pantanal biome ( which resulted in good statistical results for predicted nitrogen and phosphorus losses. A study performed for the Concórdia watershed [82] reported streamflow, sediment and nutrient evaluations, but concluded more detailed information about effluent discharges and residue management were needed to better represent the simulated system.…”
