Summertime thermohaline structure off the Brazil Current Region between Santos (SP) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ)

Abstract: Within the scope of the MAR-14 Project, part of the Brazil-Germany Bilateral Agreement in Marine Sciences, an oceanographic survey aboard the R/V Victor Hensen was carried out in Brazilian coastal waters between Santos (23º56'S) and Rio de Janeiro (22º54'S), from January 15 to January 22,1991. In this article we report results of preliminary analyses of the hydrographic data collected with CTD, STD, Nansen bottles and XBT's. These preliminary results show intense stratification in the first 200 m depth, and th… Show more

“…After rigorous quality testing (following World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) specifications), as described by Campos et al [1994], the geostrophic computations were carried out and several plots were produced, showing the horizontal and vertical distributions of T and S, the structure of the related density (in fact, the density anomaly 70), and the geostrophic velocity field. An attempt to estimate a "level of no motion" for calculating the geostrophic velocities and associated volume transport was made, based on the Defant method described by Fomin [1964, pp.…”

“…Most of the historical oceanographic cruises in this area focused on the shelf, leaving the shelf break and slope-and therefore the Bra zil Current itself-largely unstudied. For in stance, the first time a conductivitytermperature-depth (CTD) survey was made of the SBB was in January 1991 [Campos et a/., 1994[Campos et a/., ,1995 when German and Brazilian oceanographers on board the German FS Vic torHensen performed a CTD hydrographic survey in the area between Santos and Rio de Janeiro.…”

“…Os vórtices e meandros da CB, na parte externa da PCSE, têm sido observados por dados hidrográficos clássicos [Miranda et al, 1985;Castro et al, 1987;Campos et al, 1994] e por imagens de infravermelho por satélites [Campos et al, 1995;Mello Filho, 2006]. Campos [1995] atribuiu a ocorrência de vórtices e meandros da CBà mudança de orientação da linha de costa e ao gradiente batimétrico existente na região Sudeste.…”
