Alimentação de Isopisthus parvipinnis (Teleostei: Sciaenidae) na Baía de Santos, São Paulo

Food habits and daily feeding activity of fish populations are important ecological variables for understanding their role in the ecosystem. Diel changes in feeding activity and dietary composition of juvenile whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri, shortfin corvina Isopisthus parvipinnis, shorthead drum Larimus breviceps and of juvenile and adult banded croaker Paralonchurus brasiliensis were investigated from samples taken over a 24 hours period from 4 to 5 September 1987 on the continental shelf off South-eastern Brazil. Whitemouth croaker and banded croaker had a benthic diet based on polychaetes and some caridean shrimps and showed no diel feeding pattern. Shortfin corvina and shorthead drum fed on crustaceans and teleostean fish, the former species primarily on pelagic sergestid shrimps and benthic caridean shrimps, and the latter mainly on pelagic sergestid shrimps, mysidacean and benthic caridean shrimps. Shortfin corvina is primarily a diurnal feeder, but preyed on some items only at night. Shorthead drum is a night feeder, with minimum stomach fullness values between dawn and daytime, and maximum values between dusk and night time.Key words: diel feeding, food habits, Teleostei, Sciaenidae, South-western Atlantic. RESUMO Variações nictemerais na alimentação e na atividade alimentar de peixes Sciaenidae do Atlântico sudoeste, BrasilInformações sobre o hábito alimentar e a atividade alimentar diária de populações de peixes são variá-veis de fundamental importância para entender seu papel em um ecossistema aquático. Investigações sobre esses aspectos foram realizadas em jovens da corvina (Micropogonias furnieri), da tortinha (Isopisthus parvipinnis) e da oveva (Larimus breviceps) e em jovens e adultos de maria luiza (Paralonchurus brasiliensis), cujas amostras foram obtidas em um ciclo de 24 horas (4 a 5 de setembro de 1987), na plataforma continental do sudeste do Brasil. A corvina e a maria luiza se alimentaram, principalmente, de poliquetas e camarões carídeos e não apresentaram um padrão claro de atividade alimentar. A tortinha e a oveva apresentaram dieta semelhante, composta de crustáceos e peixes teleósteos; ambas tiveram como presas principais os camarões pelágicos sergestídeos e os camarões bentônicos carídeos, e a oveva, além dessas duas presas, misidáceos. A tortinha apresentou, principalmente, hábito alimentar diurno, mas se alimentou de algumas presas em períodos de escuro. A oveva apresentou hábito alimentar noturno, com registros dos maiores valores de repleção estomacal entre o anoitecer e o período de escuro.Palavras-chave: atividade alimentar diária, hábito alimentar, Teleostei, Sciaenidae, Atlântico sudoeste.Rev. Biology of Isopisthus parvipinnis: an abundant sciaenid species captured bycatch during sea-bob shrimp fishery in Brazil

Trawling is the most common method of shrimp harvesting. This technique causes a negative impact on the fauna due to the high bycatch rates and to the animals that are accidentally caught and generally returned to the sea dead. The consequences of this technique and the biological aspects of the involved species are poorly studied, specially in the Brazilian northeast. The objective of this study was to show some aspects of the population biology of Isopisthus parvipinnis (Bigtooth corvina) captured as bycatch during sea-bob (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) shrimp fishing in the region of Ilhéus, in the state of Bahia in Brazil. A total of 1290 individuals were caught in a monthly sampling at three different stations, from March, 2003 to February, 2005. The standardized Morisita index of dispersion suggests that this species has a clumped distribution in the studied area. The number of individuals showed a significant variation (p < 0.0001) between the seasons, being higher during the winter. The estimated first maturation length (L 50 ) was about 159 mm, and 95% of the captured individuals were below this value. The sexual ratio found was 1.5 males for each female. Concerning to diet, 10 feeding categories were identified, and Decapoda Dendobranchiata was the most important in numeric frequency and occurrence. This fact suggests that Isopisthus parvipinnis is a carnivorous species, with a tendency toward crustacean-eating at least in the younger individuals.A pesca de arrasto é o método mais comum de captura de camarão. Esta técnica causa impactos negativos na fauna demersal devido ao grande número de animais que são capturados acidentalmente e que geralmente são devolvidos mortos ao mar. As conseqüências desta metodologia de pesca e os aspectos biológicos das espécies envolvidas são pouco estudados, especialmente no Nordeste do Brasil. Este estudo tem como objetivo mostrar aspectos biológicos de Isopisthus parvipinnis (tortinha) capturada como fauna acompanhante da pesca do camarão sete barbas (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) na região de Ilhéus, no estado da Bahia, Brasil. Um total de 1290 indivíduos foram capturados em coletas mensais, em três pontos de coleta distintos, de março de 2003 a fevereiro de 2005. O índice de dispersão de Morisita padronizado sugere que a espécie, na área analisada, apresenta uma distribuição agregada. O número de indivíduos variou significativamente entre as estações do ano (p < 0,0001), sendo maior durante o inverno. O comprimento estimado de primeira maturação (L 50 ) foi de 159 mm, sendo que 95% dos indivíduos capturados estavam abaixo deste valor. A razão sexual encontrada foi de 1,5 machos para cada fêmea. Quanto à dieta, foram identificadas 10 categorias alimentares, sendo que Decapoda Dendobranchiata foi a mais importante em freqüência numérica e de ocorrência. Este fato sugere que Isopisthus parvipinnis é uma espécie carnívora, com tendência a carcinofagia, ao menos nos indivíduos jovens.

. Abstract: Citharichthys arenaceus and C. spilopterus form together almost 70% of the flatfishes abundance in the mangrove ofthe Guaratuba Bay. The other important Pleuronectiformes species are Symphurus tessellatus, Etropus crossotus and Achirus lineatus. The main food items ofthis assemblage are composed by crustacea, fishes, Gastropoda and Polychaeta. None of these species was found to have a highly specialized diet, but they present some particularities: Citharichthys spp and S. tessellatus have a diet based on Caridea and fish, E. crossotus based on Amphipoda Gammaridae, and A. lineatus based on Polychaeta. The partial1y overlapping habits correspond to the most generalized diets, so any interspecific competition would be reduced by the nature of the complementary food items. Additiortal support for this hypothesis is provided by the results conceming both the species density and the percent occurrence of the prey categories.. Resumo: Citharichthys arenaceus e C. spilopterus são responsáveis por cerca de 70% da abundância de linguados no manguezal da Baía de Guaratuba. Nesta assembléia, da qual também fazem parte Symphurus tessellatus, Etropus crossotus e Achirus lineatus, a dieta baseia-se em crustáceos, peixes, Gastropoda e Polychaeta. Seu hábito alimentar não é altamente especializado, mas algumas particularidades são observadas: em Citharichthys spp e S. tessellatus, Caridea e peixes são os principais itens ingeridos; em E. crossotus, Amphipoda Gammaridae; e em A. lineatus, Polychaeta. As espécies cuja dieta está em maior grau sobreposta com outras são também aquelas cujo hábito é mais generalista. Em tais casos, a natureza dos itens complementares confere identidade própria a cada dieta, atenuando uma eventual competição interespecífica. Os resultados da associação entre a abundância das populações e o grau de participação dos itens na dieta de cada uma reforçam esta conclusão.
