Several hours mating behaviour of the woodborer isopod, Sphaeroma terebrans were recorded using a video camera. S. terebrans, the only species in the genus to lack an appendix masculina, has a peculiar way of mating that is completely different from that in other Isopoda. Instead of introducing the sperm into the genital opening of the female, the male releases it into the water current created by the beating of the female pleopods. The origin of this adaptation is discussed. RIASSUNTOIl comportamento sessuale dell'isopode Sphaeroma terebrans, è stato filmato per diverse ore, attraverso una telecamera. S. terebrans, l'unica specie del genere ad essere sprovvista di una appendix masculina, ha un modo di accoppiarsi del tutto particolare che è completamente differente da quello degli altri isopodi. Il maschio invece di introdurre lo sperma nella apertura genitale femminile, lo rilascia nella corrente d'acqua creata dal battito dei pleopodi. L'origine di questo adattamento viene discussa.

The feeding habits of Rioraja agassizii (syn. Raja agassizii) and Psammobatis extenta (syn. Psammobatis glansdissimilis) of the South-eastern Brazilian coast were studied by means of stomach content analysis. The samples were obtained on eight seasonal oceanographic cruises, carried out between October 1985 and July 1987. The importance of each food item was evaluated on the basis of the Index of Relative Importance and the feeding similarity by Percentage of Similarity. The results indicated that both species are benthic feeders, preying mainly on Crustacea, especially Amphipoda, Caridea and Brachyura. Teleostei were also important for R. agassizii. Seasonal variation of the diet seems to be associated with the availability of the prey, whose distribution and abundance are related to the dynamics of the water masses of the region. Juveniles and adults of P. extenta exploited the same resources while juveniles and adults of R. agassizii presented low diet similarity during most of the year. Caridea were an important food for all length classes of R. agassizii, while Amphipoda were for smaller specimens, and Teleostei for larger ones. The feeding overlap between the two species was higher during autumn 1986, winter 1986 and winter 1987.

The isopod crustaceans reported from or expected to occur in littoral and sublittoral marine habitats of the Southern California Bight (SCB) in the northeastern Pacific Ocean are reviewed. A total of 190 species, representing 105 genera in 42 families and six suborders are covered. Approximately 84% of these isopods represent described species with the remaining 16% comprising well-documented “provisional” but undescribed species. Cymothoida and Asellota are the most diverse of the six suborders, accounting for ca. 36% and 29% of the species, respectively. Valvifera and Sphaeromatidea are the next most speciose suborders with between 13–15% of the species each, while the suborder Limnorioidea represents fewer than 2% of the SCB isopod fauna. Finally, the mostly terrestrial suborder Oniscidea accounts for ca. 5% of the species treated herein, each which occurs at or above the high tide mark in intertidal habitats. A key to the suborders and superfamilies is presented followed by nine keys to the SCB species within each of the resultant groups. Figures are provided for most species. Bathymetric range, geographic distribution, type locality, habitat, body size, and a comprehensive list of references are included for most species.
