Seasonal variation of large medusae abundance and biomass was studied in the North Bay, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil (27°30'S, 48° 32'W), from February to December 2005. Collecting was conducted seasonally with the help of fishing bottom trawl in 30-minute sections (12 in summer, 18 in each of the remaining seasons) in six stations, totaling 66 samples. Eight species were found: the hydrozoans Aequorea sp., Olindias sambaquiensis Müller, 1861, and Rhacostoma atlantica L. Agassiz, 1850; the cubozoans Chiropsalmus quadrumanus (Müller, 1859) and Tamoya haplonema Müller, 1859, and the scyphozoans Aurelia sp., Chrysaora lactea Eschscholtz, 1829 and Lychnorhiza lucerna Haeckel, 1880. Capture rates were low, up to 38 indiv. ha-1, and only ~47% of the samples were positive for jellyfish, comprising 206 individuals. Medusae abundance and species richness clearly changed from one season to another, but did not vary between the sites. Higher species richness (7 out of 8) and greater abundances were recorded during the fall (~60% and 72% of all medusae individuals and biomass respectively). Specific frequency of capture varied from 1.5 to 29% and C. lactea was the only species found in more than 25% of the samples. The three most common species dominated in different periods of the year: C. lactea during fall (78% of individuals and 60% of biomass), R. atlantica during winter (90% of individuals and 17% of biomass), and O. sambaquiensis in spring (78% of individuals and 40% of biomass). Only two individuals were caught during summer, one C. lactea and one R. atlantica. The results offer a general picture of the distribution of the macromedusae in the North Bay, but a continuous monitoring is desirable for a more detailed knowledge on the jellyfish dynamics in the Brazilian coastal waters

A list of 169 medusae species in 45 families recorded in Mexican waters is presented for the first time. 86 species (50.8%) were found in the Pacific Ocean, 75 species (44.3%) in the Gulf of Mexico, and 88 (52%) in the Mexican Caribbean Sea. Only 17 species (10%) were common to the three regions. The superclass Hydrozoa, the most diverse one, is represented by 151 species (89%), the Scyphozoa by 16 species (9.5%) and the Cubozoa by 3 (1.8%). Among the Hydrozoa, up to 6 new species have been described from Mexican waters. It is expected that the number of species will grow as surveys that include the hydroid stages and their laboratory-released medusae, as well as benthic and deep-living medusofauna are undertaken in both the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts of Mexico.

RESUMEN. Medusas, sifonóforos y ctenóforos son organismos ecológicamente importantes por su papel como depredadores voraces en la cadena trófica, ya que en altas densidades ocasionan problemas económicos. En las costas mexicanas del Golfo de México existe conocimiento de la riqueza taxonómica de estos animales macrozooplanctónicos, pero aún se desconoce qué especies se encuentran en los arrecifes coralinos del norte de Veracruz. Este estudio presenta los primeros registros de este grupo para el Sistema Arrecifal Lobos-Tuxpan. Se identificaron tres especies de medusas, un sifonóforo y dos especies de ctenóforos a partir de registros fotográficos obtenidos en los arrecifes Tuxpan, Enmedio, Tanhuijo, Oro Verde y Lobos. El taxón Cyanea sp. se registra por primera vez para el suroeste del Golfo de México y Cestum veneris es nuevo registro para el litoral veracruzano. Las especies Aurelia aurita (medusa), Physalia physalis (sifonóforo) y Mnemiopsis leidyi (ctenóforo) se observaron en la mayoría de los arrecifes estudiados. Jellyfish, siphonophores and ctenophores are ecologically important organisms due to their role as voracious predators in the trophic chain, which in high densities may cause economic problems. There is knowledge of the taxonomic wealth of these macrozooplanktonic animals in the Mexican coasts of the Gulf of Mexico, but it is still unknown what species are found in the coral reefs from the north of Veracruz. This study presents the first records of this group for the Lobos-Tuxpan Reef System. Three species of jellyfish, one siphonophore and two ctenophores, were identified through photographic records belonging to the Tuxpan, Enmedio, Tanhuijo, Oro Verde and Lobos reefs. For the first time, the species Cyanea sp. for the South-West of the Gulf of Mexico and Cestum veneris for the Veracruz coast are recorded. The species Aurelia aurita (jellyfish), Physalia physalis (siphonophore) and Mnemiopsis leidyi (ctenephore) were observed in most of the studied reefs. The information provided here may be useful in the tourist sector to avoid toxic jellyfish and siphonophores.
