Sipuncula from southern Brazil

Abstract: SynopsisA collection of 291 sipunculans from the continental shelf off southern Brazil is descnbed. Ten species are included, two new to science (PhMc..OUOn. me.dl.L6a.e. and Á6pido~iphon. lon.ginhyn.c..I.L6J, The latter comprises 74% of the specimens collected. Four are recorded for the ~rst time in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean (Gol6in.gia. e./te.mi.ta., G. pellLLúda., A. albl.L6, and A. e.xha.I.L6.tu6J. The remaining two (G. ~akia.n.a. and P. he.dJta.e.u.mJ have been recorded from Brazilian waters before… Show more

“…misakianum was found in shallow waters (1-77 m) of the Indian Ocean (Cutler and Cutler, 1996;Saiz Salinas, 1993); from intertidal to 160 m depths in Japan (Cutler et al, 1984) and at 166 m from the outer Continental Shelf of Southern Brazil (Cutler and Cutler, 1980). In the present study, this species was found at depths ranging from 41 to 195 m.…”

“…However, the maximum trunk length (7.8 mm) of Apionsoma (A.) misakianum from the Aegean Sea is much smaller than those reported from the Indian (49 mm) (Cutler, 1994) and Pacific Oceans (25 mm) (Stephen and Edmonds, 1972), but somewhat similar to those from southern Brazil (5 mm) (Cutler and Cutler, 1980). In addition, the number of intestinal coils (6-10 coils) given by Stephen and Edmonds (1972) for this species was lower than that of the present specimens (11-23 coils).…”

“…Horizontal advection is an important process in the redistribution of temperature in areas where the surface currents and horizontal gradients in SST are relatively strong. South of the STI, both the historic ship drift vectors [ Cutler and Swallow , 1984; Mariano et al , 1995] and direct current measurements from moored stations and shipboard profiling [ Schott et al , 1994] show strong seasonal cycle with westward (eastward) flowing Northeast Monsoon Current (SMC). A moored current meter array deployed south of Sri Lanka showed the exchanges between the BoB and the AS resulting from the monsoon forcing [ Reppin et al , 1999].…”

“…Sipunculans in Southwest Atlantic are still poorly known. In Brazil, the collection of this organism along the coast was mainly made by oceanographic expeditions at the continental shelf [103][104][105][106]. Besides that, the benthos from the intertidal zone and beyond the continental shelf of the Brazilian coast are still poorly or completely unexplored [107].…”
