Show more

“…At Costa Azul Beach, where the animals were more exposed to wave action, crustaceans were the dominant taxa, whereas the polychaete S. squamata dominated at Pontal Beach. Along the Brazilian coast, S. squamata occurs in beaches along São Paulo and Paraná State coasts (Amaral 1979; Amaral et al. 1990; Shimizu 1991, 1995; Omena & Amaral 1997), and it is the most characteristic macrofauna species, both in abundance and frequency (Souza & Gianuca 1995; Borzone et al.…”

Similarly, Barros et al (2001) found that S. squamata was the most representative species on a dissipative beach of the Paraná State coast, representing 70% of the total macrofauna abundance.…”

“…These worms can reach high abundance and biomass on sheltered beaches, mangrove £ats and sand £ats, occurring mainly in the upper level of the intertidal region (Lana et al, 1997). The broad distribution of L. acuta and its probable ecological importance in marine food webs have interested many authors (Amaral, 1979;Bemvenuti et al, 1992;Ieno & Bastida, 1998;Ieno et al, 2000). Its population dynamics and secondary production on a tidal £at on the south-east coast of Brazil were also investigated (Omena & Amaral, 2000).…”

“…Lewis & Stoner (1983) observed that capitelid polychaetes aggregated under Thalassia plants where the concentl-ationof detritus material can be higher. This species is also known to be resistant to pollution but not to wide salinity ranges (Amaral, 1979). Flynn et aI.…”
