Numerical modeling of buckling failure in a mine slope

Abstract: In this work the failure mechanism of flexural buckling that occurred in Pau Branco Mine, of Vallourec & Mannesman Group, in 2002, was ResumoNesse trabalho, o mecanismo de ruptura por flambagem flexural ocorrido na Mina Pau Branco, do Grupo Vallourec & Mannesman, em 2002, foi estudado a partir da aplicação de modelagem numérica por elementos finitos. O programa Phase2, da Rocscience Inc., foi empregado nas análises. Apesar de ser um método aplicável a maciços contínuos, as descontinuidades podem ser incluíd… Show more

“…The results show that as the coal seam continues to advance, the maximum settlement displacement remains basically unchanged, and the settlement displacement curve presents an asymmetric flat bottom distribution and the stress concentration in front of the coal wall is the source of the abutment pressure. Silva and Lana [21] used RS2 software to study the failure mechanism of flexural buckling that occurred in Pau Branco Mine, of Vallourec and Mannesman Group, in 2002. Through the back analysis of the failure mechanism, they obtained the representative values of in situ stress state, normal stiffness modulus, and shear stiffness modulus of foliation structure.…”

“…Furthermore, Garzon 11 combined the tangent modulus theory with Euler formula to analyze the stability of buckling landslide by considering the length of bending section of the slide mass. In addition to analytical solution method, some studies combined numerical simulation with strength reduction method to evaluate buckling landslide stability 12–15 . Adhikary et al 16 .…”

“…In addition to analytical solution method, some studies combined numerical simulation with strength reduction method to evaluate buckling landslide stability. [12][13][14][15] Adhikary et al 16 implemented the large deformation continuum model to the finite element program to evaluate the buckling failure stability of stratified rock slopes. Zheng et al 17 combined step and step analysis model (SSAM) and overall analysis model (OAM) with universal distinct element code (UDEC) to calculate buckling landslide stability.…”
