The effect of microstructural features on the mechanical properties of LZSA glass-ceramic matrix composites

Abstract: This work reports on the characterization of ZrSiO 4 particulate-reinforced Li 2 O-ZrO 2 -SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 (LZSA) glass-ceramic matrix composites. The typical physical/mechanical and chemical properties of the glass batches and the composites were measured. A composition with 60 wt.% ZrSiO 4 was preliminarily selected because it demonstrated the highest values of bending strength (190 MPa) and deep abrasion resistance (51 mm 3 ). To this same composition was given a 7 wt.% bentonite addition in order to obtai… Show more

“…The physical and chemical properties of glass-ceramics mainly depend on the composition of glass, type and amount of the crystalline phase, microstructure, the heat treatment procedure and nucleating agents [7]. Glass-ceramics are also considered as intrinsic composites because during heat treatment the reinforcing phase is nucleated from the parent glass, which, therefore, provides toughness and mechanical strength to the polycrystalline solid [8]. Previously a number of studies have been made on doped glass-ceramics with * E-mail: madeehariaz2762@yahoo.com different nucleating agents, such as TiO 2 [9,10], to obtain effective crystallization and sinterability of the glass-ceramics.…”
