Post mortem analysis of burned magnesia-chromite brick used in short rotary furnace of secondary lead smelting

Abstract: Burned magnesia-chromite bricks are the standard product for the lining of furnaces in lead industry, where the short service life is a great problem. Used sintered magnesia-chromite brick sample from short rotary furnace lining, sent by a secondary lead manufacturer, showed parallel cracks to the hot face due to structural spalling damage. The refractory infiltrated region and slag interface were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive spectroscopy analyzer, and X-ray diffracti… Show more

“…By contrast, the element Mg is observed to be homogeneously distributed between the FeO and TTM areas examined in these maps ((a4) and (b4)). This is consistent with the higher solubility of Mg 2+ in FeO [168], [169].…”

“…Refractory has been studied by applying various techniques: thermochemistry (for example, by using FactSage ™ software), 4,7 simulations using finite element and multiphysics models 8,9 and laboratory [10][11][12][13] or industrial postmortem analyses. 4,6,[14][15][16][17][18][19] This work focuses on the analysis of the chemical degradation of the magnesia-chromite refractory lining of an industrial SAF after a 6-year campaign at a copper smelter (4.5 mill. t. of slag processed).…”

“…[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Particularly in the lead industry a lot of work was done regarding refractory corrosion testing in different pilotscale and industrial furnaces. For instance, Oprea 7 discussed failure mechanisms observed on the magnesia-chromite bricks lined above the slag line of the flash furnace for zinc-lead smelting.…”

“…In order to explain these findings some laboratory work was done additionally. Prestes et al 8 analyzed wear phenomena on magnesia-chromite bricks from the lead short rotary furnace. Similar to Oprea, in addition to post mortem studies also some experimental work by crucible corrosion testing was carried out.…”
