Quality of life of patients with paucibacillary leprosy

Abstract: BACKGROUND -Leprosy, an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, can affect the skin and the peripheral nervous system and, depending on the level of involvement, it can lead to severe deformities. Leprosy is classified into two major groups: paucibacillary (up to five lesions) and multibacillary (more than five lesions). “…Those with physical deformities and disabilities also presented a higher DLQI score . Another study evaluated only PB volunteers and found no effect of the disease on QoL when using the DLQI . MB and PB groups also did not differ when evaluating the total score of DLQI, although the MB group reported to have more interference of skin on routine (question 3) and on social and leisure activities (question 5).…”

“…28 Despite this negative scenario, there are few studies measuring the QoL of people with leprosy in Brazil, 7,29-31 all the more since some were limited to patients with leprosy reactional states 31 or paucibacillary type. 30 Lustosa et al 7 showed that suffering discrimination was associated with worse scores of QoL in the pain, general health, vitality, and role-emotional domains of the SF-36. Our study also shows consistent and significant QoL impairment in four domains-role-physical, general health, social functioning, and roleemotional-of the eight SF-36 domains, even after adjusting for confounding variables.…”
