Abstract: RESULTS: 1,718 people were examined and 90 cases of Hansen's disease were diagnosed. “…Leprosy around the world has been neglected by many countries that do not report data to WHO [18]. Many studies describe active case detection for leprosy [19][20][21], but most are [22]. We aimed to educate primary health care providers on neurological as well as cutaneous signs/symptoms of leprosy but also implementing tools for the leprosy control program at Jardinópolis, a municipality with no endemic prevalence detected during 2010-2014.…”

“…Leprosy around the world has been neglected by many countries that do not report data to WHO [ 18 ]. Many studies describe active case detection for leprosy [ 19 21 ], but most are applied by primary health care workers-based almost exclusively on skin signs, and suspicious cases are referred to specialists. Diagnoses are closed only after SSS and/or biopsy; neurological symptoms are unfortunately not considered, although there is no leprosy without nerve damage, as Fite stated in 1943 [ 22 ].…”

“…7,9 This method is also important, but should be well prepared and well directed, especially when smaller-scale campaigns are considered. 6 Epidemiological surveillance activities to search contactees and case-source identification is essential when there is a diagnosis of leprosy in children under 15 years old because it reflects an early and intense exposure, with high bacterial load (important indicator of the prevalence of the disease in the general population).…”
