Micoses superficiais na Paraíba: análise comparativa e revisão literária

Abstract: A survey of the incidence of clinically diagnosed cases of superficial mycosis was carried out using individual report cards in four Family Health units in Patos-PB, in 2007. We had a sample of 197 positive records with Pityriasis and Tinea as the most incident mycoses. There was a higher prevalence among female patients who were between 11 -20 years of age. A high number of non-identified infections was found: 46,19%. The identification of the agents of such non-identified infections is not possible as they a… Show more

“…In a 2010 study, Araújo et al found that patients aged 0-20 years accounted for nearly half of all cases of dermatophytosis in the Brazilian state of Paraíba. 21 In Natal, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Calado et al (2006) found an average age of 47 years. 22 Corroborating these findings, the highest prevalence of dermatophytosis in our sample was among the 51to-60 age range (Table 1).…”

“…These fungi use the keratin as their main substrate, and for this reason the disease affects mostly the keratinized tissues. In humans, this results in skin and scalp lesions and onychomycosis in the nails [1]. Dermatophyte infection affects approximately 40% of the world population and accounts for 30% of all cutaneous mycotic infections.…”

“…Regarding the anatomical site affected by dermatophytosis, 3.19% of preschoolers, aged between 6 months and 5 years, presented lesions in the hair scalp, which could be due to immune system deficiency against this type of infection, lower sebum production in the hair scalp and higher exposure to risk factors such as poor personal hygiene and agglomeration in education institutions. 1,13,[25][26][27][28][29] The absence of lesions in preschoolers' nails can be attributed to rapid nail growth, smaller surface area for invasion of infecting conidia and reduced probability of trauma. 30 In the case of cutaneous candidosis, children aged between 6 and 12 years were the most affected-5.37% and 3.71% of the cases corresponded to onychomycosis in the feet and skin lesions, respectively.…”

“…Over the past years, the prevalence of superficial fungi infections has shown a gradual increase and, is common in most tropical countries due to elevated humidity, elevated temperature and sweating. However, these kinds of infections are also dependent on the immune status of the host, fungal agent and site of infection 10,[20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][34][35][36][37].
