Identification and rearing of four thrips species vectors of Tospovirus in the Federal District, Brazil

Abstract: The disease caused by the viruses belonging to the genus Tospovirus is a serious problem in horticultural and ornamental crops in Brazil. In the field, this virus group is transmitted by the insect vector, thrips. Little is known about the thrips species occurring in Brazil, and which species are important for the dissemination of these diseases. For the study of epidemiology of this virus group, different thrips populations, which may have the capacity to be vectors of tospoviruses, were collected in the Fede… Show more

“…Despite the great importance of CSNV in chrysanthemum and tomato crops in Brazil ( Nagata et al, 1998), the vector of this tospovirus species was unknown. In this study, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, Frankliniella schultzei Trybom and Thrips tabaci Lindeman, which are known to be vectors of some other tospovirus species ( Wijkamp et al, 1995) and often major thrips pests in vegetable and floral crops in the Federal District, Brazil ( Nagata et al, 1999b), were tested for their ability to transmit CSNV. The infection of adults of these species was confirmed by amplification enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).…”
