Galaxy merging is a fundamental aspect of the standard hierarchical galaxy formation paradigm. Recently, the Galaxy Zoo project has compiled a large, homogeneous catalogue of 3373 mergers, through direct visual inspection of the entire Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic sample. We explore a subset of galaxies from this catalogue that are spheroidal 'post-mergers' (SPMs) - where a single remnant is in the final stages of relaxation after the merger and shows evidence for a dominant bulge, making them plausible progenitors of early-type galaxies. Our results indicate that the SPMs have bluer colours than the general early-type galaxy population possibly due to merger-induced star formation. An analysis using optical emission-line ratios indicates that 20 of our SPMs exhibit LINER or Seyfert-like activity (68 per cent), while the remaining 10 galaxies are classified as either star forming (16 per cent) or quiescent (16 per cent). A comparison to the emission-line activity in the ongoing mergers from Darg et al. indicates that the active galactic nuclei (AGN) fraction rises in the post-mergers, suggesting that the AGN phase probably becomes dominant only in the very final stages of the merger process. The optical colours of the SPMs and the plausible mass ratios for their progenitors indicate that, while a minority are consistent with major mergers between two early-type galaxies, the vast majority are remnants of major mergers where at least one progenitor is a late-type galaxy. ?? 2012 The Authors Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society ?? 2012 RAS

A "era da Informação" constituiu tema de uma extensa pesquisa de Castells, no final dos anos 1980. Várias das implicações debatidas por este autor naquela altura são hoje observáveis, principalmente nas tendências de precarização das atividades de produção da informação. Perante a procura cada vez mais acentuada de informação, as empresas de comunicação, as televisões, os jornais impressos e online desenvolvem métodos terceirizados de produção e informação que consistem em recrutar, através de concursos, uma elite letrada de outros países para produzir "notícias locais" de qualidade. Neste artigo debruçamo-nos sobre um caso concreto de terceirização de informação a partir de uma plataforma de bloggers recrutados essencialmente em África. Com base na análise de entrevistas realizadas a dez desses bloggers, mostramos, ainda que de forma exploratória, os conflitos emergentes desse processo de produção terceirizada da informação. Na problematização mobilizamos conceitos desenvolvidos na área da sociologia do trabalho, bem como outras produções teóricas recentes sobre a precarização do trabalho informacional. Esta ideia está bem presente nos debates atuais desenvolvidos pelos próprios jornalistas (Sindicato dos jornalistas, 2015).Neste texto debruçamo-nos sobre as mundividências de um grupo de bloggers estrangeiros, sobretudo africanos, que participam de meios de comunicação franceses e que entrevistámos no âmbito de um projeto mais amplo (Katembera, s/d). Trata-se de um grupo marcado pela precarização no trabalho e que revela vários traços identitários típicos das novas situações de trabalho gerados no pleno contexto da era informacional.Com efeito, o trabalho, enquanto atividade, proporciona diversos processos de construção do sujeito que não envolvem somente as condições materiais dos trabalhadores, mas também a maneira como esses atores se autodefinem. Rodrigues (1970) mostra no livro "Industrialização e Atitude Operária" que os trabalhadores, mesmo estando sujeitos às mesmas condições de trabalho e às mesmas relações de dominação, desenvolvem atitudes diferentes atribuíveis aos modos de estruturação das identidades

Outsourced information: identity and unpaid work in the age of digital journalism

The Age of Information has been extensively studied by Castells, in the late 1980's. Several of the implications discussed by this author at the time are observable nowadays, specially the ones concerning the tendencies to precariousness that labor activities related to information production present. Due to an increasingly accentuated demand for information, communication companies (such as TV stations and printed and online newspapers) have developed outsourcing methods of production of content. Said methods consist, basically, on the recruitment of a literate elite of professionals, originated from other countries, to produce quality "local news". In this article, we analyze a concrete case of outsourcing of information, performed by a French blog platform that mainly recruits contributors from Africa. Based on the analysis of the interviews carried out with ten of these bloggers, we show, albeit in an exploratory way, the emerging conflicts that the process of outsourced production of information generates. During the discussion of this subject, we mobilized concepts developed within the field of sociology of work and other recent theoretical productions on the precariousness of informational work.
