Evaluation of the microbial diversity of denitrifying bacteria in batch reactor

Abstract: -Microbial communities in an industrial activated sludge plant may contribute to the denitrification process, but the information on the microorganisms present in denitrifying reactors is still scarce. Removal of inorganic nitrogen compounds can be accomplished by the addition of carbon sources to the biological process of denitrification. Ethanol is an economically viable alternative as a carbon source in tropical countries like Brazil, with large-scale production from sugarcane. This paper reports the succes… Show more

“…The genus Comamonas has been extensively studied for various bioremediations application and was reported to be a natural pollutant degrading microbe. Both of C. nitrativorans and C. denitrificans isolated from denitrification of activated sludge were reported to convert nitrate to nitrogen (Xing et al 2010;Maintinguer et al 2013), while C.tertosteroni can reduce heavy metals selenite (Zheng et al 2014). C. terrae strain A3-3 isolated from tannery wastes and agricultural soils have shown to potentially oxidize arsenite to arsenate (Chitpirom et al 2009).…”

“…The estimation of DB was confirmed by determination of nitrate in the sample under the formation of the quinoidiamonium (blue precipitate), by the addition (twothree drops) of diphenylamine acid solution (2 g L À1 H 2 SO 4 ). The combination of the positive responses (no blue precipitate formation) and negative responses (blue precipitate formation) was made by determination of the denitrification process (Maintinguer et al 2013).…”

“…However, although specific and reliable, these techniques have high costs. Culture methods based on the Most Probable Number (MPN) technique have been widely used for several decades and remain the standard method for quantification of SRB (Luna, Costa, Gonçalves, & Almeida, 2008) and other microorganisms (Maintinguer, Sakamoto, Adorno, & Varesche, 2013).…”
