Mathematical modeling of supercritical fluid extraction of oil from canola and sesame seeds

Abstract: -Mathematical modeling of supercritical fluid extraction of oil from canola and sesame seeds with a two-phase model was performed in this work. A model based on differential mass balance was used to correlate the experimental data. Different adsorption isotherm models (Henry, Freundlich and Brunauer, Emmet and Teller (BET)) were used to describe the equilibrium state. Three model parameters such as effective diffusivity (D eff ), mass transfer coefficient (K f ) and axial dispersion coefficient (D ax ) of the … Show more

“…It is pertinent to note that the knowledge of the kinetics is essential for the design of extraction systems (Baümler et al, 2014;Honarvar and Sajadian, 2013;Minozzo et al, 2012) In the present work, the influence of temperature (T) and solvent-to-feed ratio (S) on the kinetics and thermodynamics of microwave-assisted extraction of flavonoids from P. emblica is reported. It is pertinent to mention that no prior art on the kinetics and thermodynamics of MAE of flavonoids from P. emblica is available in the literature.…”

“…Thus, the proposed model incorporates the principal assumptions of both simplified BIC and SC approaches, and considers only one diffusional resistance (attributed to either the cell membrane or transport channels). The solute sorption/desorption effects are not considered here.…”

“…However, these type of thermodynamic calculations in the simulator would make the model more difficult, increasing the calculating times and reducing the appealing of the developed program. Therefore, a direct fitting solubility was used in this work, similarly as it was done in previous studies [10,11].…”

“…They compared two options: Shrinking core model and Broken and intact cell model, obtaining that the first would be the best option to reproduce the extraction (deviations lower than 8.54% and 14.65% respectively). Similarly, B. Honarvar et al [11] also assessed the modelling for the extraction of sesame seeds but comparing three different equilibrium relations: Henry's, Freundlich's and Brunauer, Emmet and Teller's. Their result was that the latter would be the most appropriate to reproduce the experimental yields (deviations of 9.84 %, 7.42% and 5.28% respectively).…”
