Spray-dried chitosan microspheres cross-linked with d, l-glyceraldehyde as a potential drug delivery system: preparation and characterization

Abstract: -Chitosan microspheres of a small particle size and with good sphericity were prepared by a spraydrying method followed by treatment with a cross-linking agent. Owing to restrictions on the use of crosslinked chitosan microspheres in the pharmaceutical field, d,l-glyceraldehyde, a biocompatible reatant was used. The parameters studied affecting extent of cross-linking were cross-linking time and concentration of the cross-linking agent. Glutaraldehyde, the aldehyde most frequently employed as chemical cross-li… Show more

“…This is mainly attributed to complexing agents which are not covalently bonded, and, consequently, the ligand is not rigidly attached to the adsorbent [8,9]. Chitosan is an excellent support, extensively used in the microencapsulation of drugs [10]. It is obtained from the partial deacetylation of chitin in concentrated alkaline solutions.…”

“…One of these methods, the spray drying technique, has been successfully employed in the preparation of microparticulated delivery systems (Conte et al, 1994;Blanco et al, 2003;Huang et al, 2003;Oneda and Ré, 2003;Oliveira et al, 2005). This method offers advantages such as a rapid and one-step process, applicability to heat-sensitive materials and the possibility of scaleup (Wan et al, 1992).…”
