Measurement of the electrostatic charge in airborne particles: I - development of the equipment and preliminary results

Abstract: The design and construction of a equipment capable of measuring the electrostatic charges in aerosols, named the electrostatic charge classifier, were carried out. They were based on the concept of particle electromobility and the charge classifier was intended to classify the nature and the distribution of electrostatic charges as a function of particle size. The resulting piece of equipment is easy to dismount, which facilitates its cleaning and transport, and easy to operate. Early results indicate that the… Show more

“…A full description of the apparatus and techniques used for the measurement of the distribution, magnitude and polarity of charge carried by the airborne particles is given elsewhere (Coury, 1983;Coury at al., 1991;Marra Jr., 2000;Marra Jr. and Coury, 2000) and only a brief account is given here.…”

“…The apparatus can be divided in to three sections: A -aerosol insertion and gas flow stabilization section, B -particle deflection section, and C -particle collection section. The present design provides a flat profile for the gas velocity in all the extent of region B, with U 0 = 0.30±0.04 m/s (see Marra and Coury, 2000). The classifier is placed in a horizontal orientation with the test aerosol introduced from the central slit in section A.…”

“…We observed that clusters of blackish dust and greyish deposits of nanometric appearance on a sample of low-density PE packaging film seemed to have been deposited by convection and by triboelectricity induced by the nature of the substrate [83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90]. These types of PM 10, PM 2.5, and PM 0.1 deposits are characteristic of the aggregates of fine and very fine dust that accumulate on packaging that is naturally charged.…”
