Writing the history of knowledge in Brazil

Abstract

This article surveys recent contributions to the history of knowledge in Brazil, mainly concerned with the history of the sciences, and makes some suggestions about the future development of the field, focussing on the different spaces or sites of knowledge (colleges and universities, museums, archives, botanical gardens, observatories, newspapers, foundations and so on) that have proliferated in the last 200 years in particular.

Economists, Scientific Communities, and Pandemics: An Exploratory Study of Brazil(1918-2020)

Burke's (2018) critical survey of recent Brazilian historiography of science notices that the history of social sciences lags behind the history of natural sciences in the country. Although he mentions some works on the history of social sciences, no references to research on the history of Brazilian economic thought are provided, which illustrates how economics has remained largely apart from other sciences.…”
